(Stender) Stender on March 18, 1925 at Clinton, Iowa. She received her elementary education in rural Clinton County schools and graduated from Andrew High School in 1942. After attending classes at the University of Dubuque, she taught in rural schools for two years. She married Harry E. Johnson in 1946. They divorced in 1967. She was a farmer's wife until December 1965 when the family moved into Wyoming, Iowa. She worked as a domestic for two years, attended night school classes at Kirkwood Community College and subsequently became a secretary for the Wyoming Mutual Telephone Company in October 1967, where she worked until her retirement at the end of 1991. Arlene was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church and the Mary Rebecca Circle. She especially enjoyed and treasured working with the Piece Makers quilting group. After her retirement, she became an enthusiastic player of cards and belonged to several card clubs. She also did some volunteer work at the Wyoming Museum and the Wyoming Library. She loved her family dearly, cherished holiday gatherings at her home in Wyoming, and thoroughly enjoyed the addition of each grandchild and great grandchild. She is survived by 3 daughters, Carole (Robert) Hesse of Phoenix, Arizona, Linda (Paul) Thomsen of Dubuque, Iowa, and Margaret "Peg" Houdek of Gravois Mills, Missouri; 3 granddaughters, Stacey Thomsen Bennett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Michele Hesse Bronder of Goodyear, Arizona, and Amee Barclay of Wilton, Iowa; 3 grandsons, Mark Hesse of Tempe, Arizona, Jake and Josh Conner of Bettendorf, Iowa; 3 great-grandchildren, Grace and Brooke Bronder and Max Bennett; and one brother, Carlyle (Nellie) Stender of Maquoketa, Iowa. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Darrel Stender and one daughter, Cynthia Johnson. Arlene D. Johnson of Wyoming, died Sunday, February 19, 2006, at Silvercrest, Anamosa, Iowa, following a short illness, at the age of 80 years.
