Description	:	Arlene Evelyn Preheim was born on March 25, 1917 to Harry and Gertie (Jensen) Christensen in their home in rural Freeman, S.D. She joined her brother, Floyd, and sisters, Sylvia and Lucille, as the youngest in the family. When she was 2 years old, her father died and her mother was left to raise the children. Read More	Arlene Evelyn Preheim was born on March 25, 1917 to Harry and Gertie (Jensen) Christensen in their home in rural Freeman, S.D. She joined her brother, Floyd, and sisters, Sylvia and Lucille, as the youngest in the family. When she was 2 years old, her father died and her mother was left to raise the children. Arlene attended a country school, Freeman Elementary and Freeman High School, completing her education at Freeman Junior College. After that one year of teacher education, Arlene taught in two country schools south of Freeman. For a couple of years she roomed with a family in the district for economic and practical reasons. Roland Preheim met Arlene at a church sponsored Fourth of July band concert on a farmyard in the community. One Christmas he proposed to her and in May of 1939 they were married. They had four children: Janelle, Gaylen, Murray and Stuart. Most of their married years, they farmed southeast of Freeman and Roland sold Pioneer Seed. That earned them at least two trips outside the country, which they enjoyed very much. After retirement, they continued to travel by car, but mostly in the U.S., some trips taking several weeks. Mom remembered the trips well and could recount what she ate at almost any location mentioned from their itinerary. Food was always important to Arlene. She liked to cook and bake, and preserve fruits and vegetables. After their retirement and while they lived in town, Roland was the gardener and Arlene made use of the produce by preserving whatever she could. Together they also liked to entertain friends and relatives who seemed to enjoy the pies, sweet rolls and coffee they were served. Mom also enjoyed the Extension Homemaker Club she belonged to. The women there were her friends and she felt she benefited from them and the subjects covered. Both Roland and Arlene enjoyed their family, especially their grandchildren and growing group of great-grandchildren. Family gatherings were in their home until Arlene moved to Oakview Terrace when she was 97. Their welcome was always genuine when grandchildren stopped by to change clothes, for a snack or just to say hello. Arlene attended Lutheran and Mennonite congregations when she was young and was re-baptized at Salem Mennonite Church, Freeman, in 1943 by Willard Claassen. She remained a member of the Salem church until her death. Her contributions included teaching children’s Sunday school and committee work for Mennonite Women. Roland and Arlene together were custodians at the church for 20 years. As a couple they participated in Lions Club and the M2 prison visitation program. Although not a member of either, Arlene was a willing supporter and participant when needed. She also volunteered at the Et Cetera Shoppe and was an East Freeman correspondent reporting news for the Freeman Courier for a number of years. Arlene died at Oakview Terrace on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017 at 100 years of age. Survivors include Janelle and husband Orville Ortman; Murray; and Stuart and wife Mary Ann (Sorensen). Grandchildren are Tanya (Ky Stoltzfus), Amy (Charles Payne), Paul (Charity) Ortman, Emily (Tony) Botting, Stacy (George) Gees, Devin (Jeff) Gilbertson, Rachel Preheim and Grant Preheim. She had 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-law: LuVerna Preheim, Barb Carlson and Ann (Ivan) Regier; brothers-in-law: Peter (Lynette) Preheim and John (JoAnn) Preheim; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Preceding her in death were her husband, Roland; a still-born daughter; her son, Gaylen; and her siblings: Floyd Christensen, Sylvia Haugan and Lucille Graber/Walter. Arlene will be remembered for her love of family and friends, hospitality for all, love of cooking and appreciation for the beauty of butterflies.
