She was baptized May 17, 1925, and confirmed April 2, 1939, both at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver. She graduated from Denver High School. Arlene was born April 24, 1925, in Denver, the daughter of Louis and Emma Nolting Kurtt. She was baptized May 17, 1925, and confirmed April 2, 1939, both at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver. She graduated from Denver High School. She was united in marriage to Harold Wittenburg on April 15, 1945, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver by Pastor Fred Schoenbohm. The couple farmed southeast of Denver before moving into town in 2004. In 2009, after Harold's death, Arlene moved to Stratford to be closer to her family. Arlene loved to cook, bake and work as Harold's "hired hand" on the farm. She was an avid sports fan, and cheered loudly for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals. Harold and Arlene also loved to square dance, and were long-time members of the Denver Stardusters Square Dance Club. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, and a brother, LaVern Kurtt of Denver. She is survived by her daughter Joanne Patterson and her husband, Ken, of Stratford, Iowa; two grandsons – Travis Patterson and his wife, Wendy, of Boone, Iowa; Tracy Patterson and his wife, Abby, of Van Meter, Iowa; and one granddaughter Kelly Haman and her husband, Lance, of Stratford, Iowa. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Madison, Avery and Aiden Haman, and Brett, Ben, Maisey and Gage Patterson. Other survivors include a sister-in-law, Viola Kurtt of Denver, and sister- and brother-in-law Delores & Shorty Baethke of Cedar Falls, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver, with Pastor Ron Mathews officiating and Pastor Joseph Lambert of Stratford, Iowa, providing the message. Burial will follow the services at the church cemetery in Denver, Iowa. Friends may call at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver from 3:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2013.
