Description	:	Arlene Eunice Schlinkert, daughter of Fred and Elma (Erickson) Schmidt, was born at the family farm at Honey Ridge, near Plainview, Minn., on Feb. 27, 1922. She was baptized into the Christian faith at her grandparents' home in Cedar Valley, Minn., on April 30, 1922. She later confirmed her baptismal covenant at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lewiston, Minn. on March 21, 1937. She was baptized into the Christian faith at her grandparents' home in Cedar Valley, Minn., on April 30, 1922. She later confirmed her baptismal covenant at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lewiston, Minn. on March 21, 1937. The family moved from Honey Ridge to a farm near Altura, Minn., and later to a farm in the Bethany community northwest of Lewiston. She attended rural Bethany school for first through seventh grade and then attended St. John's Lutheran Day School for eighth grade. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1940. Following graduation, Arlene attended Business College in Winona, Minn., and worked for a short time at the Winona Co. Ag Agents office in Lewiston. Arlene enrolled in Luther College at Decorah, Iowa, for the 1942-43 school year and it was there she met her future husband. Following the school year, Arlene moved to Minneapolis, Minn. where she worked at the Augsburg Publishing House. Arlene was united in marriage to Robert Schlinkert at the Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church in Minneapolis on May 25, 1946, a marriage that lasted 61 years. To this union were born six children, a son and five daughters. As with most pastors' wives, Arlene lived in a number of communities during those years. Their first home was in Decorah until Robert finished his college education. Then they moved to Minneapolis while Robert attended Seminary. From there they moved to Sherwood, N.D., while Robert vicared at the Mohall-Sherwood Lutheran Parish. Then they lived at Dazey, N.D., where Robert served a dual parish and then on to Woodworth, N.D. when they served a tri-parish. In 1958, the family moved to Selby when Pastor Schlinkert was called to serve Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Selby, and Norway Lutheran Church, rural Glenham. Arlene started working at the Mobridge Care Center around 1968. When the family moved to Gregory, she worked at the Rosebud Nursing Home, regaining her position at the Mobridge center when the family returned to the area. Arlene then decided to pursue a Licensed Practical Nursing degree from St. Mary's School of Nursing, graduating in 1980. She worked at the Mobridge Regional Hospital until the end of 1990 when she moved to Winona to care for her elderly father for five years. Arlene's health began to deteriorate in early 1996 with the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and finally Alzheimer's disease. Arlene entered the Golden LivingCenter in March 2005 and died there on Feb. 19, 2008, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 23 days. Survivors include her husband, Robert of Mobridge; a son, David Schlinkert, Rapid City; five daughters, Eunice (William) Hanson, Oceanside, Calif., Junia (Doug) Meyer, Willow Lake, Marcia (Kim) Kempton, Rosholt, Naomi (Roy) Deegan, Austin, Texas, and Paula (Eugene) Holzer, Mobridge; two sisters, Gladys (Eldon) Steuernagel, Owatonna, Minn., and Sheila (Kenneth) Mueller, Lewiston, Minn., 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents and a great-grandson. Funeral services for Arlene were Monday, Feb. 25, at Zion Lutheran Evangelical Church in Mobridge. Rev. Peter Naumann officiated. Burial was in the Norway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Glenham, under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Casketbearers were Jolene Harvey, Mike Coles, Sara Kempton, Heidi Kempton, Andrea Deegan, Andrew Deegan, Jeremy Holzer and Brandon Holzer.
