Description	:	Arlene L. Matthias, 85, of Denver, Iowa, died early Thursday morning, October 18, 2007, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of breast cancer. Arlene was born May 4, 1922, in Dayton Township, Bremer County near Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Meswarb) Kueker. She was baptized on May 28, 1922, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sumner and confirmed on April 2, 1939, at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn. Arlene attended country school near Sumner. Arlene was born May 4, 1922, in Dayton Township, Bremer County near Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Meswarb) Kueker. She was baptized on May 28, 1922, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sumner and confirmed on April 2, 1939, at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn. Arlene attended country school near Sumner. Following her formal education, Arlene worked for neighboring families, and on June 26, 1938, she was united in marriage to Wilbert H. Lobeck at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home near Dunkerton where the couple began their family. In 1950 they moved to Readlyn, and in the early 1960's Arlene went to work at Black's Department Store in Waterloo as a sales clerk. In 1968, the family moved to Denver and Arlene continued to work in Waterloo. Wilbert died on November 6, 1979, and Arlene continued to live in her home in Denver and work in Waterloo. She retired in August of 1986, and on August 30, 1986, she was united in marriage to Lester Matthias at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver. The couple made their home in Denver until a short time ago when they moved to Bartels. Arlene was a longtime, faithful member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver. She enjoyed quilting, shopping, and traveling, and loved the times spent with her family and host of friends. Arlene is survived by her husband, Lester Matthias of Denver, three daughters; Shirley (Roger) Thurm of Denver, Iowa, Carol (Larry) Strottmann of Readlyn, Iowa, Lorri (David) Shelstad of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one son Jerry (Connie) Lobeck of Denver, Iowa; one step-daughter, Carol (Marvin) Luhring of Tripoli; 11 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren, and one brother, Raymond (Linda) Kueker of Oelwein, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Wilbert Lobeck, two great grandchildren, Erica & Nicholas Thurm, and two brothers, Roland & Arnold. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 22, 2007, 11:00 am at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver, Iowa, with Pastor Sarah Stadler-Ammon officiating. Burial will be held in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Denver. Public visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice-Waverly, St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver, or to the donor's choice. Online condolences for Arlene may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
