Arlene Olson was born August 2, 1916 in Hooker, SD to Martin and Mable (Andahl) Olson, and was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rural Centerville, SD. She attended Midway School District #53 in rural Centerville and married Maurice J. Dwyer on September 6, 1935 in Sioux Falls, SD. Dwyer, 96, of Wakonda, SD passed away Thursday, November 1 at the Wakonda Heritage Manor Avera. Arlene Olson was born August 2, 1916 in Hooker, SD to Martin and Mable (Andahl) Olson, and was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rural Centerville, SD. She attended Midway School District #53 in rural Centerville and married Maurice J. Dwyer on September 6, 1935 in Sioux Falls, SD. They farmed and made their home on Frog Creek Road until moving to Wakonda in 1960, where they continued their family and raising their eight children. Maurice passed away in 1981. She attended the First Lutheran Church in Wakonda and was a member of the Wakonda Senior Citizens, First Lutheran Quilters and the Frog Creek Birthday Club. She spent her life caring for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid card player but she enjoyed nothing more than preparing a wonderful meal for a house full of family. She expressed her love and generosity through numerous home cooked meals and dishes. She will be fondly remembered for her delicious cookies, red jell-o salads, gravies, casseroles and countless birthday cakes. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two children: JoAnn and John, brothers Melvin, Robert, Arnold, Donald and a sister Mary Ellen Gross. She is survived by six children: Bill (Monica) Dwyer of Yankton, SD, Sharron (Elton) Hinseth of Irene, SD, Mary (Bob) Lapeska of Sheboygan, WI, Kathleen (Charlie) Pierce of Venice, FL, Kathryn (Curt) Streff of Ord, NE and Barbara (Bob) Bell of Livermore, CA. A son in law Jack McCarty of Wakonda, a brother Jim (Jean) Olson and a sister in law Nila (Don) Olson all of Centerville, 20 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM Monday, November 5 at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene with burial of ashes at the Union Cemetery in rural Wakonda. A lunch will follow the burial at the Wakonda American Legion. There will be a 7:00 PM Prayer Service Sunday, November 4 at the funeral home.
