Arlene died Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Heritage of Bel-Air Nursing Home in Norfolk. Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements. Arlene was born to Lon and Marie Frahm Soden on January 12th 1925 at the family farm home near Wisner, NE. She then moved with her parents to a farm in Wayne County and that was to be their home. She graduated from the eighth grade at Wayne County District 81 and then graduated from Winside High School in 1942. She enrolled at Wayne State College for one year. Arlene then went on to teach at District 28 South for three years. She loved her pupils there along with the school. Arlene’s pastime was embroidery work; she made pictures for her grandchildren. On June 2nd 1946, Arlene was united in marriage to Walter Fleer Jr. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winside. The young couple moved to the family farm north-west of Hoskins. That was their home together for over sixty-six years. Walt and Arlene raised three daughters and three sons. They also have sixteen grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Community Bible Church where she taught a Sunday school class in her younger years. She belonged to A-Teen Extension Club when it was extension and afterwards when it became a neighborly club. She loved flowers, especially roses, but most of all she loved her family. Survivors include her daughters Cheryl (John) Witzel of Pleasant Dale, NE., Nancy (Peter) Varhola of Spring Valley, CA., Carol (Bernard) Wrede of Pierce, NE. Sons Mark (Lois) Fleer of Hoskins, NE., Robin (Jane) Fleer of Hoskins, NE., David (Lavonne) Fleer of Pierce, NE. Sixteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Sister-in-law Marjorie Heusinger of Norfolk, NE. Brother-in-law Dr. George Heusinger of Norfolk, NE. Sister-in-law Mary Ann Soden of Norfolk, NE. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Fleer Jr., parents Lon and Marie, brother Stanley Soden, and a granddaughter Jill Wrede. Pianist for the service will be Anne Marie Hess, and soloist will be Amy Fleer singing “How Great Thou Art." Congregational hymns will be “Amazing Grace” and “In The Garden." Casket bearers will be Michael Fleer, Raymond Fleer, Dean Fleer, Steven Fleer, Ryan Witzel, and Lonnie Carlson. Honorary bearers will be Arlene's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
