Arlene was born at home in Westmore on May 17, 1930, the second child of Clifton and Greta Drohen Perkins. She grew up on the family farm. Arlene attended the public schools of Westmore and then attended Orleans High School. She graduated as class valedictorian in 1948. She next attended Lyndon Teachers College, graduating in 1950. Arlene was born at home in Westmore on May 17, 1930, the second child of Clifton and Greta Drohen Perkins. She grew up on the family farm. Arlene attended the public schools of Westmore and then attended Orleans High School. She graduated as class valedictorian in 1948. She next attended Lyndon Teachers College, graduating in 1950. Arlene married Loudon George Young on August 21, 1950. During their almost 54-year long marriage, they lived and worked on their dairy farms in West Glover, first at Edgewood Place and later at Springdale Farm. As a girl, Arlene experienced life on a dairy farm. As a woman, she recreated what she knew and loved. Farming was in her blood. She loved everything about life on the farm - the animals, the work, and the open spaces. Well, she probably didn't love the uncertainty, but she realized that it was part of the package. Arlene was an avid gardener. For years and years, she managed a large plot that yielded bountiful summer meals. She also canned, froze, and pickled the surplus. In addition to her vegetable garden, she made sure flowers always decorated the front yard. Arlene was a great cook and a generous hostess. Friends, neighbors, and relatives often made sure that their visits coincided with suppertime. Although she was an accomplished cook, she always enjoyed dining out with family members, even if it was just McDonald's. Arlene loved to take long Sunday afternoon drives in the countryside. Arlene liked to chat, but she loved to chat with her husband, Loudon, who provided her with stories about the world beyond the farm. Arlene was a voracious reader, especially murder mysteries, a taste she shared in common with several of her children. Arlene's life was centered on her family. She loved her husband and children, but she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren! Arlene is survived by her children, John Young and his life partner, Janet Russell, of Charleston, S.C., Edward Young of West Glover, Georgia Young of Glover, Dean Young of West Glover, Darlene Young and her husband, Ned Andrews, of Glover, and Arthur Young and his wife, Tara, of West Glover; her grandchildren. . ., her great-grandchildren, . . .; her siblings, Pauline Simons and her husband, Bob, of Claremont, N.H., Roger Perkins and his wife, Barbara, of Storrs-Mansfield, Conn., Cliff Perkins and his wife, Kathleen, of Williston, Avis Elliott and her husband, Earl, of Danville, Betty Simons and her husband, Francis, of Middlebury, and Larry Perkins and his wife, Judy, of Westmore; her sisters-in-law Barbara Perkins of Orleans, and Doreen Cleveland of Orleans; and by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Loudon; her brothers Alvah and Raymond Perkins; and by her son Richard. . . ."
