Arleta Grace Elswick, age 93 of Lamoni, Iowa, daughter of Henry and Carrie [Hayer] Sumption, was born on May 6, 1912 in Lamoni, Iowa. She died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, March 20, 2006. Grace was the youngest of three children. She and her family lived in and around Lamoni all of her life. Her family was very important to her. She was very proud of the fact that she graduated from Lamoni High School. She taught country school for several years before marrying Paul Elswick. Grace and Paul were married in 1940 and spent 58 good years together before Paul died in 1998. They farmed west of Lamoni. They have one son, Robert "Bob" James. When Bob was in high school Grace started work at Graceland College. She enjoyed many years working in the Periodicals Department of Graceland's Library. She made many friends, some whom she remained close to until the time of her death. Grace also enjoyed the college students, talking of several and telling stories for years after. When son Bob and his family settled in Lamoni, near the family farm, they became a big part of Grace and Paul's lives. They both enjoyed their three grandchildren. Grace loved to tell them stories of the "old" days and they loved to hear her tell them. After Paul's death, the grandchildren were the biggest part of Grace's life. A few years after Paul's death, Grace moved to Crown Colony in Lamoni, and came to enjoy living there. Even in her 90's Grace continued to have a beautiful flower garden, which was her pride and joy. She was a good friend and neighbor and will be remembered and missed by many. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Paul; sister Nina and Arthur Christensen; brother Harold and Lorene Sumption; brothers-in-law Norman & Arlene Elswick and Jesse Cartwright. Surviving are son and wife, Bob and Kathy Elswick of Lamoni grandchildren: Lee, Brent, and Beth Elswick; sister-in-law Greta Cartwright of Lamoni; nieces and nephews: Chuck & Janet Cartwright, Candy Bradley, Myrna & Steve Aldrich, Lyman Elswick, Sue & Don Parsons, and Sheila & Galen Grote; and other relatives and friends.
