Arlie Mescal Gilbert Allen, the daughter of Benefield Vincent Sr. and Odia Dell Emerson Gilbert was born March 28, 1921, in Huron, South Dakota. Her childhood years were spent in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa where she received her education. She married Orlo James Allen on September 16, 1939, in Spencer. Following their marriage, they had their only child, Steven James Allen in 1941. In 1943, they moved to Spencer where she worked for the Daily Reporter. They later owned and operated Allen Marina and Gun Service and she taught Genealogy as a night class for ILCC in Spirit Lake. In 1982, she began work for the Iowa Agency on Aging in Estherville and continued to work until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of the BPW in Spirit Lake and was also a member of the Spencer Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orlo, on January 3, 1982; and her son, Steve, on October 1, 1990 She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Carol Allen of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren; Bryan Allen and his wife, Cathi of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Christine; Thomas; Mark and his wife, Sherry Allen of Spirit Lake and Scott Allen and his wife, Becky, of Estherville; one sister, Velma Lenz of Emmetsburg and one brother, Ben Gilbert, Jr. of Menlo Park, California; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
