Description	:	Arlo Victor Hullinger, age 100, of Leon, Iowa, the third son of Earl Victor and Cecil Clare (Hamilton) Hullinger, was born August 29, 1921, at his parents' home in rural Decatur County, Iowa near Boothtown. Read More	Arlo Victor Hullinger, age 100, of Leon, Iowa, the third son of Earl Victor and Cecil Clare (Hamilton) Hullinger, was born August 29, 1921, at his parents' home in rural Decatur County, Iowa near Boothtown. He died peacefully on December 29, 2021, at Southern Hills Specialty Care Center in Osceola, Iowa. Arlo grew up in Decatur County on his parents' farm. He attended Hardscrabble Country School and then Leon High School, graduating in 1939. He attended Iowa State University for two years. With World War II approaching, he left college to help his father on the farm. On December 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Sage. They made their home on a farm in Decatur County and were blessed with five children, Larry Ray, Linda Sue, Donald Dean, Lila Kay, and Cindy Jo. Arlo was a farmer; he started with teams of horses and ended using tractors. Arlo loved God, his family, Iowa State Cyclones, Chicago Cubs, rodeos, and politics. He was a Democrat through and through. In 1965 Arlo ran for a seat in the Iowa House of Representatives and won, he served until 1981. While in office Arlo and Betty moved into Leon. From 1987 until 1991 he served in the Iowa State Agriculture Department as Chief of Dairy Trade Practices under Dale Cochran. After a battle with cancer, Betty passed away in 1988. Arlo retired in 1991. He taught himself how to play the guitar and enjoyed playing at music jams where he met his second love, Madra Bettis. They enjoyed music jams, traveling in their RV, and wintering in Arizona. Arlo was an active member in the legislature. He could recall having to write his own bills in the beginning. He was instrumental in making Little River Lake and Watershed a reality so his constituents could have safe drinkable water and relieve the flooding downstream. He was known as a peacemaker. He said he along with everyone including Chuck Grassley. Arlo was able to stay in his own home until the last six months. His daughter, Lila and son-in-law, Mike moved in with him the last six years to care for him. Lila can fondly remember the adventures they went on. He always introduced her as his daughter, his driver, and his nurse. Arlo was an active member of the church. He accepted Jesus at an early age and was baptized in Little River just west of New Salem Church. He was a member of Bethel Baptist, Bethel First Baptist, and last at Calvary Baptist Church. I am sure many people remember his singing and teachings. Arlo's big goal the last few years was to make it to 100, which he accomplished this year in August. Preceding him in death were his parents; parents-in-law; wives, Betty and Madra; and son, Larry. He is survived by his children, Linda Seckington of Overland Park, Kansas, Don & Veronica Hullinger of Van Wert, Iowa, Lila & Mike McVey of Leon, and Cindy & Jesse Vaughn of Springdale, Washington; grandchildren, Scott Hullinger of Apache Junction, Arizona, Todd & Candace Hullinger of Phoenix, Arizona, Chad & Leanna Hullinger of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tony McDaniel of Des Moines, Iowa, Steven Hullinger of Linden, Iowa, Brian Hullinger of Anchorage, Alaska, Delissa Van Zee and fiancé, Kyle Carter of Burlington, Iowa, and Tina Talley of Leon; great grandchildren; great, great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Hullinger of Clear Lake, Iowa; nieces and nephews; cousins; and a multitude of friends.
