Armadell “Amy” Evangeline Maier was born August 19, 1942 to Theodore and Freidericka Viola (Sackmann) Maier at Eureka, SD. She grew up on her parent’s farm located eight miles east of Ashley and helped with the chores around the farm. She attended country school through eighth grade in Iowa School District near Ashley, ND and graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1960. Amy then went on to Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics Education in 1964. Over the next seven years, Amy taught junior and senior high Home Economics in Bowman, ND and Hawley, MN. She became a Food Economics Specialist in the EFNEP program for five years at ND Extension Service at North Dakota State University. She went back to school to obtain a degree in Early Childhood Education from Moorhead State University (MSUM). Amy worked for 28 ½ years at Great Beginnings Child Care Center in Moorhead as Co-Director and Head Teacher for Infants, retiring in 2009. Amy was the recipient of the YWCA Women of the Year Award for Advocate of the Young Child in 1995. Her faith and church were very important to her. She was involved in Bible studies, volunteered in The Children’s Ministry and assisted in assembling the church bulletins. Family was a priority in her life, and she enjoyed spending time with them and friends. She was always ready to travel and liked to read and embroider. Grateful for having shared Amy’s life are her sisters, Marilyn (David) Dorsett of Milbank, SD and Sharon Maier of Moorhead; two nephews, Mark (Judy) Dorsett of Berthoud CO and Gregg (Andrea) Dorsett of Kansas City, KS; one great nephew and three great nieces, Evan, Alexandra, Jenna and Josie Dorsett and two aunts, Ollie Sackmann and Esther Eszlinger, both of Ashley. Preceding Amy in death were her parents and many aunts and uncles. Honorary Casketbearers will be Amy’s Bible Study Group. Casketbearers will be Amy’s family and friends. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
