Mrs. Ellen Cleveland, beloved resident of Chico for the past 60 years, passed away this morning at a local hospital following an illness of two days. "Mrs. Cleveland was the widow of the late George Cleveland, member of a pioneer Chico family, who owned the Cleveland Ranch and after which Cleveland Avenue was named. "Mrs. Cleveland was the widow of the late George Cleveland, member of a pioneer Chico family, who owned the Cleveland Ranch and after which Cleveland Avenue was named. Cleveland passed away seven years ago. "Mrs. Cleveland was born in Arkansas and moved to Chico with her parents at the age of three years. Webb of Wilmar, Calif.; Mrs. Meda Shore of Chico; Mrs. Irma Chambers of Chico; Mrs. Helen Wood of Chico; Clark Cleveland of Napa; and Robert Cleveland of Chico; one brother, George Brown of Chico. Twenty-two grand children and eleven great grand children also survive. Funeral arrangements will be announced later at the Black & Johnson funeral home." ~~~ The Chico Enterprise, Friday Evening, December 22, 1940: "Rites Held for Mrs. Cleveland. With many beautiful floral offerings banking the chapel of the Black and Johnson funeral home and many friends and relatives attending, services were held this afternoon for Mrs. Ellen Cleveland, well known pioneer Chico resident who died here Tuesday. "Rev. Harris Pillsbury of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian church officiated at the services. Mrs. L.A. Kloor played soft pipe organ music before and after the service. The interment was held in the family plot beside her late husband, George Cleveland, in the Chico cemetery. "The following friends acted as casket bearers: Henry Allen, Howard Conway, George Fosmire, John McManus, Emmett Pore, and Elmer Rice."
