ARMOND DRAKE HANGS SELF SHELBYVILLE RESIDENT MENTALLY UNBALANCED TAKES OWN LIFE FRIDAY ABOUT NOON—WORRIED OVER LOSS OF MONEY Armand F. Drake of Shelbyville committed suicide Friday, shortly after noon, by hanging or choking himself to death with a rope halter. The rope, with one end knotted about his neck, was tied to a joist about seven feet from the floor. Evidently Mr. Drake was firm in his intention of dying. When found his feet were on the floor and his body in a reclining position. The rope must have slipped or was longer than he supposed. Apparently he stood on a feed box to adjust the rope and then stepped off, as the box was close by. The wonder is that he would continue m his efforts to kill himself after his feet were on the floor. Mr. Drake was found by his son, Frank, who went in search of him when he did not return to the house. He had been seen shortly before he took his life. Mr. Drake has been mentally unbalanced for several months. The trouble is thought to have originated when he sold his farm near Epworth. He brooded over the matter continually, thinking he had lost money on the deal, which was in fact a good one, the land did advance some later. Recently he wsn taken to a sanitarium at Jacksonville, Ill., where he spent some time, returning a few weeks ago. He was recogniz ed by those who knew him to be mentally deranged and his sole subject was the sale of his farm. He recently bought back the farm at an advance of $4,000, later reselling it at a lower figure. The entire loss, however, was not a great one to him, as he was worth considerable money. It is said that Drake had been heard to threaten to take his own life. He attempted to buy a revolver in Shelbina a short time ago but the sale was refused him. It is reported that he attempted this in Shefbyville also. Deceased was a well known auctioneer in Shelby county, especially in the north part, where most of his business was transacted. He started in the business at LaBelle about fifteen years ago and moved to Shelbyville about five years ago. Previous to that he was a farmer. Mr. Drake was 62 years of age and is survived by a wife, a daughter, Mrs. Gussie Moran of Shelbyville, and two sons, Frank and Mark. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Shelbyville Sunday afternoon at 2:00, o'clock conducted by Rev. E. E. Bostwick of Carrollton, Mo. Burial was in the I. O. O. On Friday afternoon the lifeless body of Armon F. Drake was found by his son, Frank Drake, hanging from a rope halter in a barn at Shelbyville, where he had committed suicide. The only reason for the tragedy was grief and remorse over the selling of his farm near Epworth. For some time he was said to have been brooding and lamenting over this fact and lately bought the farm back for $4000 more than he had sold it for. He had owned the farm for over thirty-five years. Mr. Drake had been in declining health for several months and his friends had noticed that his mind was somewhat affected. About a month ago he was taken to a sanitarium for medical consultation and lately returned. He was considered one of the best auctioneers in Shelby county, which work he had done for the past fifteen years. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, a daughter and son. Funeral services were held at Shelbyville Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. E. E. Bostwick, of Carrollton, Mo., a brother of W. H. Bostwick of this city. Drake prominent farmer and auctioneer of Shelby county, who took his own life by hanging himself with a rope halter. He was found shortly after noon by his son Frank hanging from a joist in the barn at his home in this city. When he did not appear for the noon meal Friday Mrs. Drake sent he son to look for him. Upon entering the barn the son was met with the grewsome sight of seeing his father hanging from a joist. He used a rope halter, fastening one end to the joist about seven feet from the ground and the other in a slip knot about his neck and had apparently stepped off a feed box when the know was tied. When found he was in a kneeling position, his feet touching the ground. Mr. Drake had been some what mentally unbalanced for some time, believed to have been caused by worry over the sale of his home place near Epworth about six months ago. While apparently very robust, his health had been failing for some time and this probably had much to do towards undermining his nervous system. He was a man of unusual energy and always a hard worker and of late years his work as an auctioneer was unusually strenuous. He was born in Shelby county October 5, 1859, and was 60 years, 2 months and 14 days old at the time of his death. He lived here all his life and for more than 30 years made his home on his farm near Epworth. His parents, Francis E. and Margaret Drake came to Missouri from Virginia the year before the Civil war broke out. His father was one of those who was imprisoned at Macon during the Civil war and was one of the ten men who were later executed at Palmyra. Mr. Drake grew to young manhood in the Burksville neighborhood and for many years made his home with William Parsons. When still a young man he went to farming for himself and was very successful. About 15 years ago he became associated with Col. John J. Ellis in the work of auctioneering, which occupation he followed until the time of his death, his last spiel being that of P. E. Dunn, Jr . of this city less than two weeks ago. For the past three years he has been associated with ------ Kaylor of Steffenville and the firm Drake & Kaylor is one of the best known in Northeast Missouri. Mr. Drake and family have made their home in Shelbyville. On December 20, 1882, he was married to Miss Lena West Moffett. To this union seven children were born, three of whom survive, Mrs. Gussie Moran and Mark H. Drake of this cith and Frank Drake of near Epworth. He is also survivied by his wife, two older brothers, Ed Drake of near Burksville and Chas. O. Drake of Council Bluffs, Ia., and a sister, Mrs. H. H. Downing of Santa Clara, Califf. One sister, Mrs. John Parsons, died several years ago. The funeral was held at the Methodist church in this city Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock before one of the largest crowds that ever attended a funeral service here, conducted by a former pastor of this church and a frined of the deceased, Rev. E. E. Bostwick of Carrollton. Burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
