Description	:	Armistead (Armstead) J. Everhart was a carpenter, and a Union loyalist and soldier, who died at age 30 as a result of wounds suffered in the Civil War. Armstead, when 26 years old, was a Captain in the 56th Virginia Militia during the period of John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry in the fall of 1859. His company, Co. G, was known as "Everhart's Company" and was composed of men from the Lovettsville area. In July 1861, after the outbreak of the Civil War, he marched 50 men of his company to Harper's Ferry under the Union banner, and volunteered to aid the Union cause. Immediately, they began guiding Union forces into Virginia. As leader of the resistance to secession in north Loudoun in the summer and fall of 1861, Everhart also testified at the military trials of a number of local residents, such as the outspoken secessionist Jonah Potterfield. In February 1862, he was offered a commission as a 2d Lieutenant in the 12th Virginia Infantry (Union), an unsuccessful effort to form a Unionist Eastern Virginia Brigade. Sam Means, later to lead the Loudoun Rangers, was offered a Captain's commission. In June, when Means was authorized to form the Loudoun Rangers, Everhart and other members of "Everhart's Company" immediately enlisted. In fighting at Leesburg on Sept. 2, 1862, Everhart suffered a shattered knee; he was taken into custody, and paroled, and he apparently died as a result of his injuries less than a year later. Everhart, says that Armstead was baptized, and buried, at St. James Reformed Church, and that he was single, and adds: "Armstead was killed in the Civil War.
