Armstrong Walton was born in Beaver county, Pennsylvania, April 11, 1842, the son of Ezekiel and Catherine Walton, both natives of that county. They came west to LaSalle county, Illinois, in an early day and later to Hardin county, Iowa, and settled in Pleasant township and got wild land and lived there until their deaths, making a success of farming. Their family consisted of six children, three of whom are now living: Daniel, of Buffalo Center, Iowa; Martha also lives in that place; Emeline is the wife of Asbury Rhodes, of Providence township, this county. Armstrong Walton had only a limited schooling and he lived at home until he enlisted in defense of his country during the Rebellion, as a member of Company C, One Hundred and Thirty-sixth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, at LaSalle, Illinois, in 1864, in which he served very faithfully until the close of the war. After his discharge he returned to that state and made his home there until 1866, when he came to Hardin county, Iowa, secured a farm of eighty acres in Pleasant township, which he improved and where he established a good home. He was married on October 30, 1867, to Emily J. Lytle, of Sandusky county, Ohio, and that county. In 1855 this family came west and located in Lee county, Illinois, where they remained a year and a half, then came to Hardin county, Iowa, and located three miles and a half west of Eldora, in Pleasant township, where they secured land and improved it, and on which they spent the balance of their lives. They were the parents of fourteen children, only two of whom are living, Harriett, wife of Thomas Walton, of Boulder, Colorado, and the wife of the subject. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong Walton, named as follows: James, a farmer in Providence township, this county, married Mary Crosby; Alice, wife of T. Christison, of Jackson, Minnesota; Elnora is the wife of S. B. Hubbard, of Armstrong, Iowa; Thomas, Walter T. and Mary Ellen are all deceased. The parents of these children lived in Pleasant township several years and in Grant township six years, then moved to Hubbard in 1908, where Mr. Walton lived retired until his death. He devoted his life to farming and was successful, working hard and managing well, thereby laying up a competency for his old age and his family. He was a Republican, but never aspired to any office. He was a member of the Christian church of Hubbard, was well known and had a host of warm personal friends throughout the county. The death of this excellent citizen occurred on September 21, 1905. Mrs. Walton, a lady of fine personal characteristics, is a member of the Christian church, and she is living in her pleasant and well furnished home in Hubbard.
