Description	:	Arnold E. "Hap" Vyverberg, 91, of Oelwein, died Wednesday, May 6, at Mercy Living Plus, Oelwein, after a short illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1917, in Lovington, Ill., son of Arnold Elmer and Nina Piper Vyverberg. He married Eleanor Pirillo on May 20, 1941, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein. She died June 17, 1992. He graduated from Lovington High School in 1935 and later from Upper Iowa University, Fayette. Read More	Arnold E. "Hap" Vyverberg, 91, of Oelwein, died Wednesday, May 6, at Mercy Living Plus, Oelwein, after a short illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1917, in Lovington, Ill., son of Arnold Elmer and Nina Piper Vyverberg. He married Eleanor Pirillo on May 20, 1941, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein. She died June 17, 1992. He graduated from Lovington High School in 1935 and later from Upper Iowa University, Fayette. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Mr. Vyverberg taught and coached baseball and basketball at Sacred Heart High School from 1955 until it closed in 1972; from 1972 to 1977 was elementary PE teacher at Parkside, Harlan and Hazleton and assistant basketball coach; and from 1955 to 2001 Sacred Heart School gymnasium manager. He also owned and operated Hap and Ken's Sporting Goods Store, Hap's Sport & bike shop and later Hap's Silk Screening. Hap, along with Bob Allen, ran the Wings Park Recreation program in the summer for the city for many years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein, Knights of Columbus #1168 and American Legion Ross Reid Post #9. Survived by: two daughters, Linda (Mike) Mahoney and Vicki Smith, both of Stillwater, Minn.; a son, Jere (Mary) of Waverly; seven grandchildren, Tami Lyons, Kelli Roddy, Tim Mahoney, Kara Hester, Angela Chaplin, Amanda Sanderman and Jamie Smith; and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: a sister, Jeannette Haake; a brother, William; a sister-in-law, Virginia Vyverberg; a great-grandchild, Eoin Roddy; and his parents. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Oelwein. A full military service will be led by American Legion Ross Reid Post #9. Public visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. Scripture service. Memorial fund: has been established in his name.
