Description	:	LAUREL — Arnold Capen was born in Sioux Pass, Mont., on Sept. 3, 1919, to parents George and Julia Crowell Capen. He was raised on the family farm in the Big Opening area of the Yellowstone River valley, Northeast of Fairview. Arnold attended school in Dore, N.D. On April 1, 1941 Arnold enlisted in military service. He was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Wash., for infantry training, later transferring with his outfit to Australia. Read More	LAUREL — Arnold Capen was born in Sioux Pass, Mont., on Sept. 3, 1919, to parents George and Julia Crowell Capen. He was raised on the family farm in the Big Opening area of the Yellowstone River valley, Northeast of Fairview. Arnold attended school in Dore, N.D. On April 1, 1941 Arnold enlisted in military service. He was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Wash., for infantry training, later transferring with his outfit to Australia. In October 1943, it was reported in his hometown newspaper, "Sgt Capen is now fighting the enemy in New Guinea, and his many local friends knew the enemy was in for plenty of trouble." Following honorable discharge in 1945, Arnold returned home to Fairview, where he worked for the Blue Rock Bottling Company. On Dec. 8, 1946, Arnold married Alice Baxter. Shortly after their marriage, Alice tragically suffered a stroke. She died June 7, 1947. Following the death of his wife, Arnold lived for a time with his sister Althea and Bob Flynn and their young family. He eventually moved to Laurel, seeking a fresh start and a new direction for his life. Arnold worked for the Railroad and later for Green Construction. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 400, building many new subdivisions in Billings, as the city rapidly grew. On Oct. 11, 1952, Arnold married Hulda Eisenbraun. They made their home in Laurel. Arnold worked as a mechanic for Cenex in Billings for many years, while Hulda worked as Laurel's faithful Avon Lady. During his employment with Cenex, Arnold was proud to be selected to travel to Rockford, Ill., for specialized training in his work. He retired from Cenex as shop foreman in 1984. He continued to operate his own auto mechanic shop in Laurel for the next 10 years. Arnold was also a skilled carpenter. Arnold and Hulda enjoyed 51 years of married life together in the home that Arnold built for them. Hulda died Nov. 3, 2003. Arnold was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Laurel. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, fishing and traveling the beautiful state of Montana that he loved. Arnold passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 13, following a hard fought struggle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his nieces, Julie Hust of Bothell, Wash., Laurel Disbrow of Auburn, Wash., and Bernadine Flynn of Edmonds, Wash.; nephews James Flynn of Oshkosh, Wis., and Arlen Flynn of Fairview. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Alice and Hulda; his brothers, Bruce and George; his sister, Althea Flynn; his brother-in-law, Robert C. Flynn; and his nephew Robert G. Flynn. Arnold was loved and respected by many; he will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 19, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Interment with military honors will be in the Laurel Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel.
