"Arnie" Mohning, 75, of LeMars, lifelong Plymouth County resident, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars. Arnold Louis Mohning was born June 11, 1921, on the family farm in Marion Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of Louis and Wilhelmine (Wiebke) Mohning. He received his education in a country school in Marion Township. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. On Dec. 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Hilda Kuttler at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. He had farmed in Plymouth County for many years. Mr. Mohning was elected to the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors in 1963, a position he held until his retirement in 1984. While on the board of supervisors, he had served on numerous committees. He was proud of his years serving on the board of supervisors and serving the residents of Plymouth County. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in LeMars, Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of LeMars, and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Remsen and the LeMars Elks Club. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Linda Rollinger and Russ Mayrose of LeMars, Rosanne and her husband, Dave Olson, of Luverne, Minn., Karen Bugge of LeMars, and Laurie Mohning of San Jose, Calif.; four sons, Steve Mohning and his wife, Kris, of LeMars, John Mohning and his wife, Deb, of Columbus, Neb., and Allan Mohning and his wife, Kathy, of Westminister, Md.; 21 grandchildren; four brothers, Merlin Mohning and his wife, Margaret, Louis Mohning and his wife, Lillian, Raymond Mohning and Henry Mohning; four sisters, Alverna Lowery, Esther Sjobakken, Norma Miller and her husband Floyd, and Helen Utesch and her husband, Ronald; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; a son, Ronald in infancy; and a son-in-law, Charles Rollinger. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, ELCA, in LeMars with the Rev. David Kramer officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery with graveside military rites by Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars. ~source: LeMars Daily Sentinel
