Born the son of Russell and Dorothy Willet Benedict on June 11, 1930, in Marion, Arnie married Sandra Blazek Horton on Aug. 6, 1960, in Cedar Rapids. He served for four years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman and crypto operator during the Korean conflict. Arnie graduated from Coe College in 1958 with a bachelor of music degree and from Adams State College, Alamosa, Colo., where he received a master's degree in school administration. Arnie was an instrumental music teacher at Sumner, Iowa, and Wilson Junior High, Cedar Rapids, and then worked for Marion Independent Schools, primarily as elementary principal. He also served as interim superintendent, personnel director and negotiator for the school system. After his retirement in 1990, he was a school bus driver for Marion and Linn-Mar schools. Arnie was a member of First United Methodist Church, serving on the board of trustees for a year and a half; Masonic Trojan Lodge 548; Marion Post 298; American Legion; and a past member of National Association of Elementary School Principals.
