Thornwell living south of Elwell, one mile and a half, was instantly killed by lightning. Mr. T. had gone to one of the neighbors to help thrash, and left the boy doing chores at home. Thornwell living south of Elwell, one mile and a half, was instantly killed by lightning. Mr. T. had gone to one of the neighbors to help thrash, and left the boy doing chores at home. A shower coming up he took shelter under a shed, the other children went to the house. The house was struck, and considerable damage, but no one was hurt. Search was made for Walter, and he was found dead under the shedd, which had bee struck too. He was eleven years of age. The funeral was held at Elwell on Friday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. Force, assisted by Rev. Ferguson. From Story County Watchman August 21, 1896 Walter, the eleven year old son of G. W. Thornwell, living south of Elwell, was killed by lightening on Thursday morning of last week. He was out under a shed, near the stable, athe the time. The house was struck at the same time and considerably damaged, but no one in the house was hurt. The funeral of Walter was held on Friday afternoon at Elwell, and was conducted by Rev. Force, assisted by Rev. Ferguson. Much sympathy is felt by the people for the family in this sad bereavement.
