VERDIGRE, Neb.- Special to The News: Arthur Jelen, about 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vac Jelen, farmers eight miles west of Verdigre, Wednesday night about eight o'clock shot and killed himself with a 16 gauge shotgun at his parents place, according to Sheriff Norman Burns. The young man had been in Omaha hospital and had arrived home by train Wednesday afternoon. He was met by his uncle, John Jelen, who took him to the farm. Jelen changed his clothes and walked about the farm. About 8 o'clock in the evening the uncle heard a shot and found his nephew had shot himself in the head. A doctor and County sheriff Burns were called. Surviving are his parents; brother, Vac,Jr., and a sister, Mrs. Ben Mlady, all of Verdigre. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Verdigre. Burial is to be in the Jelen cemetery. THE VERDIGRE EAGLE (Verdigre, Nebraska)- Thursday, July 22, 1948- Page 1. LAST TRIBUTE AND FUNERAL RITES OF ARTHUR JELEN SAT. The last tribute and funeral rites to the memory of Arthur Jelen were held at the ZCBJ hall, Saturday afternoon in the presence of many sympathizing relatives and friends who mourned the death of their pal and friend. The rites were conducted by W. J. Svoboda, whose appropriately chosen words brought comfort to the assembled relatives and friends. The speaker in a reminiscing mood said: "I knew Arthur personally for many years, and often when he came to town, we would engage in discussion of events, and I would find him very intelligent and well informed adn I would marvel at his knowledge of things that only students would find interesting. He was quick in his judgements and decisive in his opinions. I have today, lost a good friend." "We have lost a son, a brother, a neighbor and a good friend. May the God who gave him life, rest his soul forever." "Many will miss his friendly greetings, and a host of neighbors and friends today pause and wipe a tear at the untimely passing of a pal." "May God bless them all, his parents, his brother and sister, his friends and his neighbors; may He bring to them peace, now and forever." Mrs. W. J. Svoboda and Mrs. Eldiva Jedlicka Pavlik sang three hymns with an accompaniment by Mrs. E. E. Sanoz. The beautiful floral offerings which banked the casket represented the esteem and love for the departed. Interment was made in the Jelen cemetery. The pallbearers were Leonard Haineraich and Gordon Smolek, cousings of Arthur; Edward Dobry, Marvin Paesl, Johnny Prokpp and Floyd Bennar. The ladies who had charge of flowers were Mrs. Mary Tikalsky and Mrs. Joe Viterner, Sr. Out of town relatives who came to pay their last respects were Jerry Jelen and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Jelen and family of Omaha; Mrs. Bessie Synder and Mr. and Mrs.Henry Snyder and daughter of Page; and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bowers and family of Grand Island. OBITUARY Arthur Jelen was born at the farm home at Jelen, on September 18, 1925 and met his untimely death July 14, 1948 at the age of 22 years, 9 months and 26 days. Art as he was known by his friends was enrolled in Cottonwood Row school at the age of six and graduated from the eight grand at the age of fourteen years doing excellent work. He attended the Verdigre High School and finished with honors in 1943. Arthur's kindly, cheerful disposition was liked by all who knew him. He always showed respect for the aged and took time to speak a kind word to them. Even now his school mates speak of his industrious and courteous habits in the Verdigre High school. If Arthur could do some good for someone he delighted in doing it. After completing his high school course, Arthur helped his parents on the farm assuming much of the responsibility. During the first winter he took a correspondence course in English from the University of Nebraska and made good grades. He did much reading, loved to travel not only for enjoyment but also for the knowledge he could gain. About three years ago, Arthur underwent a serious operation which became a strain on his nervous system. Instead of recovering he became worse and was finally forced to seek medical aid in an Omaha hospital for a nervous breakdown which was the final cause of death. He leaves to mourn his departure his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Vac Jelen, one sister, Mrs. Ben Mlady, one brother, Vac Jelen, Jr., and many other relatives and a host of friends. - Contributed.
