Description	:	His father Garret Vanderbeek suffered a severe heat stroke in the summer of 1916 at the age of 42 and remained in the State Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska until his death in 1929. His mother Bertha rented out the family farm for a while and relocated the family to the village of Holland, Lancaster County, Nebraska to be near her father. They remained in Holland, Nebraska until 1925 when her sun Arthur was 12 years old, and then moved back to the family farm. His mother Bertha rented out the family farm for a while and relocated the family to the village of Holland, Lancaster County, Nebraska to be near her father. They remained in Holland, Nebraska until 1925 when her sun Arthur was 12 years old, and then moved back to the family farm. Arthur began farming with the help of an uncle and later his brother Garret. As the years went by he and his brother Garret farmed the home place and rented other farms near by. In 1946 Arthur married and started life on a rented farm at Pella road and Highway 43, just west of the Pella Reformed Church. They later bought that farm and the one adjoining it to the west. In May of 1957 a tornado struck the place where they lived, destroying all the major buildings except the house. That summer they moved to the west farm after they built a new house and remodeled the other buildings making them suitable for raising chickens and kept well over 5000 laying hens for about the next 10 years. They were active members of the Pella Reformed Church, Pella, Adams, Lancaster County, Nebraska. Arthur and Leona were volunteer missionaries for Reformed Church in America and served at the mission in Chiapis, Mexico and Southern Normal School near Brewton, Alabama. They lived in Firth, Lancaster County, Nebraska in retirement.
