Military Honors were conducted by the Frank H. Adams Post 750 of the V.F.W. Arthur Ervin Pionk, the son of Jerome and Julia (Lewis) Pionk was born on May 8, 1930 in Grenville, South Dakota. He grew up in Watertown and attended the Immaculate Conception School in Watertown. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1947 and served during the Korean War, supplying Soldiers and Marines in Combat support role. On January 22, 1960 he married Patricia Snaza at Lomita, CA. During the Vietnam War he served aboard a frigate in the Gulf of Tonkin. He was also based in Japan and in various installations in the United States, mostly on the West Coast. Art retired in 1967 after a twenty-year career in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer. Awards Art received during his service were the Navy Commendation Medal, the National Defense Medal with bronze service star, the Vietnam and Korea Service Medals, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm unit citation, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the United Nations Service Medal for Korea and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. In 2001, during a special ceremony in the Pentagon, Art was presented a special medal by the office of the Chief of Naval Operations for his service to the Nation. After retiring from the Navy, Art and Patsy moved to Grenville, where they owned and operated the Grenville Hotel until 1970 when they moved to Watertown where Art worked for Miracle Span and managed the Eagle Lodge for many years. Art later owned and operated the Hill Top Tavern at Pickerel Lake. Art and Patsy were Foster Parents for 20 years, caring for several children. Patsy Pionk passed away on October 13, 1996. Art was a dedicated Eagles Member for 30 years and was recently an officer of the Eagles Aerie #1362. He received a Dedication Award from the Eagles for his many years of service. Art was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Watertown, a life member of the VFW Post 750, the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Benedict Snaza; his wife, and two brothers, Jerome and Floyd Pionk. He is survived by his son, Steven (Tawnya) Pionk; two grandchildren; his companion, Dixie Currey; two sisters, Doris (Richard) Wilkey and Madeline (Allan) Murphy; and one brother, Kenneth (JoAnne) Snaza.
