Read More	Son of Arthur Oswalt & Fern Whittlesey OBITUARY ARTHUR EUGENE "GENE" OSWALT Arthur Eugene "Gene" Oswalt, son of Arthur LeRoy and Fern Whittlesey Oswalt, died Nov. 16, 2006, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, at the age of 63. Gene was born Nov. 12, 1943 in Newton. After graduating from Newton High School in 1963, he served in the Army from 1964 through 1972. After serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as a medic, Gene made his home in Salinas, Calif. for a few years working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at a hospital. Gene moved back to Knoxville in 1980 and began working at the VA Medical Center in Knoxville as a Certified Nursing Assistant in 1981. Health problems forced Gene to disability retirement in 1994. Gene enjoyed outings with the staff and friends at the VA and he loved spending time with his family and friends. During his youth, Gene loved to roller skate and dance. Those left to honor Gene's memory include four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Mary (Edward) Scannapieco, Yelm, Wash.; Linda Kunzie, Allerton; Evelyn (Doug) Hodges, Newton; Lorraine (Ed) White, Newton; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many cousins, aunts and uncles. Gene was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents, mother, father, two brothers, Charles LeRoy (Chuck) Oswalt and James Paul Oswalt, and two nephews. Funeral services for Gene were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20 at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Visitation was held one hour prior to services on Sunday. Burial was at the Zion Cemetery in Williamson.
