Irish was born at Smith Center, Kansas, on April 4, 1904, and passed away at the Premer hospital in Benkelman on April 8th, 1940, at the age of 35 years, 11 months and 23 days. Mrs. Vera Irish, two children, Gwendolyn and Darral; his mother, Mrs. Martha Irish of Denver; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Hutchison and Mrs. Elsie Rath of Denver and Mrs. Bessie Rowan of Fleming, Colorado; and one brother, Ray of Denver. Practically all were present at the funeral which was held at the Laughlin funeral home Wednesday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. J. C. Foster. Lloyd Boswell rendered two vocal solos. Interment was in the Benkelman cemetery. ************************************************** Tragedy lurked close at hand for Arthur Irish at near noon Saturday when he playfully challenged Cecil Hendrix for a friendly scuffle at the Art Brown garage. While in the midst of this contest for physical supremacy, Irish was apparently either thrown to the floor, or lost his balance and fell, his head contacting the concrete floor and causing a scalp laceration above his left ear. It was apparent to garage attendants that he was unconscious following the accident, and they feared that he might be more seriously hurt than was indicated. They thereupon took him to a local hospital for treatment. When he returned to the garage later and rested on a bench, they noted that he seemed to be rapidly growing worse and arrangements were again made for medical care and hospitalization, but to no avail, since he gradually grew worse until the end and passed away at near midnight Sunday night. A few years ago, Mr. Irish and his companion and pilot, C R. Schneider, now living north of Max, had a narrow escape from death when the plane motor stalled and the ship fell nearly two thousand feet to the corn field on the Haldeman farm north of town.
