Mr. Schauerman died Saturday, Nov 11, 2000, at his home in Odessa, Washington. He was 82 years old. He was born in Odessa, Washington on March 24, 1918, the son of Jacob and Katherine Margaret (Pister) Schauerman. Art attended school in Odessa and after the 10th grade began working with his father and uncle, Conrad Schauerman, in construction. In the late 1930s, Art joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He loved the work of the corpsmen, and could spend his days outside in the forests, clearing trails and erecting picnic tables and benches and camping facilities in the northern part of Lincoln County. When WW II began, Art joined the US Army. He served overseas in the Philippines, where he was on the staff of a military hospital. He married Elaine Diefe in Odessa on Dec 7, 1942. After the war, Art and Elaine lived in Odessa. Because of an injury to his hand earlier in life, Art could no longer work in construction. He was employed by the Odessa School District for more than 30 years. It was Art who people would call when someone needed to get into the school to retrieve forgotten homework or a lost coat at any time of day or night. Art's love for the outdoors led him to hunting and fishing. He was an excellent marksman and an outstanding fly caster. Art and Elaine began golfing in the mid-1960s. They both were avid golfers. Art continued to golf up until he turned 80 years old. When his health prevented him from doing so, he turned to gardening, raising Peace roses and vegetables, and beekeeping. Art had been a member of the Heritage Church and Odessa Men's Golf Association. He is survived by his children Amy Jo and husband Dwayne Giese, of Renton, WA; Terri and husband Kerry Schanzenback, of Spokane, and Kim Schauerman, of Odessa; 5 grandchildren: Tammy Giese, of Seattle; Lora Giese, of Miami, FL; Jamie Giese, of Renton; Sandy Otis of Kennewick; and Kristi Abbott, of Davenport; 8 great grandchildren; and one brother, Mel Schauerman, of Odessa; three sisters: Alma Fulford, of Redmond, WA; Eleanor Sackmann, of Yakima; and Harriott Kaufman, of Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elaine, a grandson, two brothers and three sisters. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Odessa Cemetery Chapel. Strate Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
