Read More	"Colusa Sun-Herald" (Colusa, California), Monday, 20 February 1939, Page 1, Column 8 Shoots Self While Family On Trip Here Poor Health blamed; Left Farewell Note on Care of Children Despondent over ill health, Arthur Henry "Bill" Bailey, 53, prominent Arbuckle insurance salesman, former grocer, oil company manager and world war veteran, committed suicide sometime before 10 o'clock this morning at his home, two miles southwest of Arbuckle, near the golf course. Mrs. Bailey and children were in Colusa on business at the time. When they returned about 10 o'clock the oldest boy, Yvon, was the first to go into the house. He found his father sitting in a chair in the living room. He had shot himself in the right temple with a .22 rifle. Yvon came running from the door, saying: "Mother, you can't go in there and see what I saw." Mr. Bailey had left a farewell note headed "Goodbye, Mother and Kids," and had written a few words of instruction as to the care of the six children, three sons and three daughters, Yvon, Donald, Bert, Yvette, Sheila and Marlene. Mrs. Bailey quickly summoned help, but Bailey was pronounced dead upon the arrival of a doctor. Coroner Tim Sullivan was notified immediately and took charge of the body. GASSED DURING WAR Bailey, who fought with the British army during the world war, and was gassed, was widely known. For a number of years he was the Williams manager for the Shell Oil company, and later was transferred to Arbuckle in the same capacity. He engaged in the grocery business in Arbuckle for some time and then purchased an almond orchard. Lately he had been selling insurance. A member of the Arbuckle Masonic lodge, Bailey had been in poor health for about a year. His tragic death came as a rude shock to his many friends throughout the county. FUNERAL PENDING The deceased was a native of New Zealand. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Yvonne Bailey and six children. He had lived in this county for 23 years. Coroner Tim Sullivan who was investigating the case today, said that the funeral arrangements were pending.
