Beginning their married life in the Dirty 30s, the couple learned the meaning of hard work and thriftiness, using everything until it couldn't be used anymore, according to their daughter-in-law Yvonne. The third generation to live on the family farm, they eventually modernized the sod home with electricity, but never did add indoor plumbing. So used to the old-fashioned methods of farming, Art was impressed with all the modern technology and thrilled the first time he rode in a tractor with air-conditioning. People would often comment on what a "cute couple" Art and Freida made when as recently as this past summer the two of them would motor over to Mr. Bob's in Selby for supper when Frieda didn't feel like cooking. Art always helped out around the house and hung out their laundry after the two of them washed it on their wringer washing machine. "They were always hovering over each other," Yvonne said. The whole town of Java was in an uproar a few years ago, she added, when the couple, both in their late 80s, decided the leaves needed cleaning out of the rain gutters. Art got out the tractor and Freida climbed in the loader and Art lifted her up to the roof to complete the task. As the pastor described it at Art's funeral, "They loved each other enough that she trusted him to look out for her." They had four children, first two daughters and then 14 years later, their two sons. Art used to tell people, "I should have had the boys first, but the girls worked really hard, too." Devout in his faith, he attended church regularly and raised his family to do the same. The eternal optimist, Art was often heard saying, "I can't complain. I've had a good life." His "good life" here on earth drew to a close Monday, Oct. 22, 2007 when Art passed away at the Bowdle Hospital, only a month before he and Frieda would have celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Arthur Henry Helm, son of Rosie (Lutz) and Christian L. Helm, was born at his family's farm northwest of Java on July 12, 1914. He was raised on the farm and attended rural school. Following his schooling, he stayed at home and helped on the farm. He married Frieda Sieler at the Sieler farm near Mound City on Thanksgiving Day, 1935. The couple farmed different places northwest of Java before settling on the Helm farm in the mid 1940s. They lived there until 1987 when they moved into Java and retired. Art belonged to St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Java Parent-Teacher Association. Listening to polka music was one of his favorite hobbies and he also enjoyed tinkering around the garage and kept a workshop in his basement at his home in Java. Surviving Art are his wife Frieda of 71 years; two sons, Dwight (Yvonne) Helm, Java, and Les Helm, Redfield; two daughters, Janice (Morris) Kosters, Rapid City, and Ruby (Henry) Kosters, Pierre, a sister, Violet Morris, San Bernardino, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Larry and Ervin) and a sister (Inez Huppert). His funeral service was Friday, Oct. 26, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Java. Casketbearers were Jonathan Helm and Jennine Helm, both of Selby, Josh Helm, Mobridge, Jason Helm, Lansing, Mich., Frank Kosters, Black Hawk, Robert Stern, Omaha, Neb., and Michael Hatlestad and Shawn Van Sickle, both of Pierre.
