Funeral service for Arthur “Art” J. Spitzer, 80, of Ashley will be 10:30 am, Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Ashley Baptist Church. The Rev. Christopher McLaughlin will officiate. Burial will be in Ashley City Cemetery. Arthur “Art” J. Spitzer, son of John and Magdalena (Graff) Spitzer was born April 20, 1934 on the family homestead near Streeter, ND. He graduated from Streeter High School with the class of 1953. He then attended Bismarck Business College for a short time, then two years at Mission House College at Plymouth, WI studying Theology. Art was united in marriage to Mabel “Mae” Zimmerman on September 9, 1956 in First Baptist Church at Ashley. They moved to Tappan, ND where he taught for one year. He then taught country school at Long Lake, SD and Zeeland, ND. In 1961 they moved to the Zimmerman homestead South of Lehr, ND where they began farming and running a dairy operation. Mae died December 9, 2010. Art continued to farm until 2012 when he built a duplex and moved to Ashley. Art enjoyed playing gin, drinking coffee and visiting with his coffee buddies. He always would greet and introduce himself to new people in town. He was a member of Ashley Baptist Church where he was a former trustee and Sunday School teacher. He had also been an Ashley Medical Center board member and KEM Electric Director for many years. Art is survived by his son, Steven (Julie) Spitzer of Lehr; daughters, Cindy (Paul) Berens of Chaska, MN and Holly Spitzer of Ft. Collins, CO; brother, Clarence (Agnes) Spitzer of South Carolina; sister, Verna Wallin of Bismarck; five grandchildren; one great-grandson and one step-great-granddaughter. His parents, wife, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Honorary Casketbearers will be Art’s coffee buddies. Casketbearers will be Laurie and Eric Heupel, Zachary Berens, Shannon and Stephanie Spitzer, Caitlin Berens, Kelsey Berens and Lindsey Heupel. The organist will be Jean Schnabel. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
