CLAEYS Longtime Resident Of This Community Dies After Long Illness As noted in these columns last week, the final summons came to a widely-known and long-time resident of this community, Arthur J. Claeys, on Tuesday morning, March 29, after an illness of several months, aged 78 years, 3 months and 19 days. Mr. Claeys was born December 10, 1881, in Courtrai, Belguim, where he grew to young manhood and graduated from the Conservatory of Music at Brussels Belgium. Coming to Canada with his parents, who located at Winnipeg, he entered upon a musical career in the United States and was a trumpet player with the Ringling Bros. circus band and other organizations. Early in the 1900's Mr. Claeys accepted an offer to come to Akron to organize a town band, in which he was very successful, and continued for several years to direct the band and present regular public concerts. The writer of this article and his two brothers were among the members of this band under Mr. Claeys' able tutelage. On September 8, 1910, he was united in marriage with Miss Josephine Agnes, of Akron, and their union was blessed with three sons and two daughters. For a number of years he engaged in the produce business here and later in Hawarden. He retired from business several years ago. At one time Mr. Claeys served as postmaster of Akron. Left to mourn the departure of a kind and devoted husband and father are his wife, Josephine; three sons, Arthur, of Sioux City; Alfred, of Wabash, Ind., and Robert, of Fort Dodge, Ia.; two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Daily, of Sioux City, and Mrs. Madeline Derring, of Lincoln, Nebr.; 22 grandchildren, and two sisters in Belgium. Funeral services were held last Thursday morning in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. J. G. Skahill officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
