Read More	ARTHUR "JAKE" AXMEAR JR., 82, of Cedar Rapids, passed into eternal life at his home, with his family at his side, on Saturday, March 20, 2004, after a short but courageous battle with malignant melanoma. Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, by the Rev. Jack D. Kendall. Internment: Cedar Memorial Mausoleum. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are with the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Shirley; a daughter, Marsha Erb (Larry), and a son, Mitchell Axmear, all of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Sue Axmear of Salt Lake City, Utah; and two granddaughters, Erin Erb Jensen (David) of San Francisco and Christina Erb of Cedar Rapids. He was proceeded in death by his biological parents, his adoptive parents, two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter, Catherine Erb. Jake was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Keswick, to William and Clara Axmear, and was adopted by Arthur and Lina Axmear following his mother's death shortly after his birth. He married Shirley M. Miersen on Sept. 20, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Jake was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and the Cedar Rapids Business College. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and was assigned to the 11th Armored Division. The division saw combat action at the Battle of the Bulge and continued across Europe and into Austria until hostilities in Europe ended. He especially enjoyed music . During his high and business college years , he played tenor sax and clarinet with many big bands and small groups. When the war ended in Europe, he joined an Army band and played for dances in Germany before returning to the states. He was a 36 year employee of Rockwell-Collins and was a manager in the finance area a the time he retired in 1987. He was a past member of the Young Men's Bureau, the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion and the VFW. In his later years, he enjoyed walking, gardening and listening to his large collection of jazz CDs. Jake will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and the unconditional love he gave to all his family.
