He died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997, in Frenchtown after a short battle with cancer. Arthur Exe was born May 26, 1912, at Norma, N.D., to Lawrence Sanders and Mabel (Middleton) Exe. He grew up in the Fort Pierre area and, as a youth, loved to swim in the Missouri River. He later moved to Eagle Butte with his family, and his father operated the local cafe. Art married Lillian Irene Boehrs on Jan. 4, 1934, in Dupree. They had three children, Lawrence, Carleen and Sandra. Art was the local manager and instrumental in the establishment of the Rural Electric Association in Timber Lake. He was later employed by Black Hills Power and Light in Rapid City as a field man. Prior to his retirement, he was an electronics technician at Ellsworth Air Force Base for 19 years. He also worked many years part time for KOTA and Duhamel Broadcasting Company. He became interested in amateur Ham radio in his early 30s and remained active in the hobby until his death. He was a longtime member of the Black Hills Amateur Radio Club. He received a number of awards for his work in communication by Ham radio during local emergencies and crisis. He and his wife were members of the Black Hills Rock Club for many years. They particularly enjoyed using their metal detectors and the quiet times at old ghost towns in the Black Hills area. He loved music and entertained family and friends often over the years. He served as a choir member for many years and attended church faithfully. He played various instruments including the saw, guitars, and the organ totally by ear. Before moving to Frenchtown in the late 1990s, he had played the organ for the senior citizens' group in Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Lillian. He is survived by his son Lawrence and wife Vivian, Frenchtown; daughters Carleen Eliason, Rapid City, and Sandra Exe and husband Bill Cissell, Spearfish; seven grandchildren, Jill Marie Exe, Barrow, Alaska, Carl and Jona Eliason, Wichita, Kans., Darin and Dale Eliason, Gillette, Wyo., Jason Exe, Frenchtown, Mark Robichaud, Albuquerque, N.M., and Paul and Heather Robichaud, Norfolk, Neb.; six great-grandchildren, Brandi and Bradley Eliason, Gillette, Wyo., Isaac Eliason, Wichita, Kans., Kyler Robichaud, Spearfish, Marcus Robichaud, Norfolk, Neb., and Nicholas King, Rapid City; a sister, June Exe Boyd and sister-in-law Elsie Harris Boehrs, Pierre; and numerous nieces and nephews.
