He was predeceased by his adored "Dot" in 1999 and by his son Roy in 2002. Dad will be forever cherished by Roy's wife Pam, his 10 surviving children his 27 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. Art has two surviving siblings Helen Steel and Don Carritt. Siblings Emily, Beatrice and Dan predeceased him. Art was born to a farming family on Rainy Creek Road on April 2, 1921. He married his Icelandic sweetheart Dorothy in 1938. We cherish the memory of Mom & Dad doing the schottische around the kitchen, they were so in love. Always, Dad had a song in his heart and a tune to be whistled, or drummed on the tabletop. He was musically talented and played the piano beautifully long after many other memories faded. Art was stationed in Ottawa for the early years of their marriage. They lived briefly in Edmonton then spent 22 years in Red Deer before becoming dedicated citizens of the Eckville community in 1969. Traditions were important to Art and he wore his uniforms with pride. He was a scout leader, Legion member, Lions member, dedicated player, coach, referee, and umpire and sports enthusiast. He loved to travel and explore in the natural environment, hiking through Alberta's pristine wilderness prospecting for lady slippers, mushrooms and of course gemstones. His passion and deep respect for nature is a banner celebrated by all of his descendents. Many of us employ his army tactic of regimentally lining up the troops, every child, to scour a camp site for any scrap of debris prior to vacating. He was an inspired cabinet builder and later partnered with his sons in the hardware business and in a service station where he was famous for selling only by imperial measure. He was an extraordinarily creative individual. He composed poetry when moved by spirit, or wrote satire when the politics of the day disturbed his sensibilities. He was a deeply principled man who was acutely aware of his responsibilities as a citizen, a husband and a father, never shy about standing up for his beliefs. Through tough times and good he always held his head high and carried on. A life-long learner who lived by two golden rules - that one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself and work hard with a song in your heart. Christmas was a singularly significant time of year for Art as it was a time when his enormous clan drew together to celebrate their devotion and dedication to one another. We fondly remember trudging through the deepest snow for the most exquisite spruce tree, hanging our stockings at the secret "chimney" and lining up from youngest to oldest to walk in as one in a spectacularly magical moment that was Christmas morning. As his family expanded so did his delicious batches of pancakes mixed with the tune of "Oh What a Beautiful Morning." Each of us believed we were Dad’s favorite and it was his gift to us that we will always feel his devoted love. The family wishes to thank Dad's many dedicated care-givers, Ronald Tangalin, Victor Bernandez, Denis Cera, Barb Thomas Mary Arseneau, West Country Family Services and Geri Gordon. A celebration of life will be held at the Eckville Community Centre Saturday January 8 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 156 or the Alzheimer's Society.
