Description	:	1.) ARTHUR L. GAULTER Arthur Lewis, second son of Lewis and Katherine Gautier was born at Lamoni, Iowa August 8, 1893. In his early youth, he was baptized a member of the R.L.D.S. Church. He attended Graceland College in 1916 and served in the first World War. Returning from service overseas, he joined his brother Wilbur in the plumbing and heating business in Lamoni. ARTHUR L. GAULTER Arthur Lewis, second son of Lewis and Katherine Gautier was born at Lamoni, Iowa August 8, 1893. In his early youth, he was baptized a member of the R.L.D.S. Church. He attended Graceland College in 1916 and served in the first World War. Returning from service overseas, he joined his brother Wilbur in the plumbing and heating business in Lamoni. April 22, 1922, he united in marriage with Elsie Goode. In 1928, they moved to Frankfort, Kan., where he engaged in plumbing and heating business, returning to Lamoni in 1940 and resumed their business here until his retirement in 1955. Arthur's health was impaired for many years and following an extended illness, he died May 3, 1971, at the age of 70 years. He is survived by his widow, Elsie; brother, Wayne of Wichita, Kan.; half-sister, Alberta Kelley of Independence, Mo.; three nephews and one niece; other relatives and friends. My Dear Parents and All: Since last writing you, we have taken our position at the front of this sector, so you see that Elmer Anderson didn't beat me to the front line very much. I have looked forward for this occasion and I now feel satisfied, as I was very anxious to see a little real activity. I am occupying a dugout presumably built by Germans. Six other boys are here also and we have made things very comfy like. We have six bunks, double deck arrangement. A small trench stove gives us plenty warmth. We have installed here one switchboard. A. T. P. S. known as ground telegraphy and a T. S. F. set known as a trench radio set. We work shifts and of course the station is open continually. I might add that this is a relay station. The dugout is about 8ftx18ftx8ft. Just outside we have a tin covered shed, in which we have a small cook stove. This is our kitchen. We get vegetables from the gardens that were left by the inhabitants, who had to leave in a hurry. We are feeding something grand. I have been placed in charge of this station, consequently I have had plenty to do. We have an operator's gas mask of a French type. It is about the same as our own, except that it has neither mouth piece nor nose clip. This allows more freedom in talking. We have used it once or twice. We are wakened occasionally by barrages being exchanged by artillery. Our "hole in the ground" is bomb proof, supposedly, consequently we rest easily. War reports are very favorable. We look for a quick ending. We get the foreign edition of the N. Y. Herald and the headlines in it today were "Austria Demands Immediate Armistice." Sounds good. We get the "Daily Mail" an English paper. Today I managed to get a Post and a few other American magazines. Have been receiving the "Ensign" also but as yet no 'Chronicle" Was out nosing around the other day and I went thru house after house where inhabitants had left hurriedly, and furniture and clothes strewn around told the tale of how they were driven from house and home. Sides of houses were full of shell holes and some had the roof blown to scraps. Battle Royal in the air takes place daily overhead. 'Tis very interesting to see those "human birds" dodge the pills that are spit at them. It takes four 40 volt, two 10 volt, and two 4 volt batteries to maintain energy for our apparatus. An electric power line is coming this way and we hope to have light soon but we get along with candles very nicely. I rewired the interior of the dugout today and inspected all the outside wiring. 'Tis like a hornet's nest here during the busy hours. I made a double throw switch out of copper wire and empty cartridge shells. I noticed in the paper where the Quartermaster Corps had completed arrangements for one hundred million cans of salmon for the U. S. boys for two months of consumption. I figured this down and I find that fifty days out of the sixty each one gets a can of "gold fish." We have to go 1 1/2 kilometers (1 mile) each day to draw rations. Today we got steak, bread, butter, syrup, canned milk, and beans. Potatoes and such we dig from the gardens. Getting rather frosty mornings now. Guess this will suffice for this time so will close and pick off a few hours of sleep while 'tis quiet. Am fine and dandy, enjoying the best of health. Love to all and goodnight. Pvt. Arthur L.
