The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 20 at 10:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Creek, with Rev. Peter Jark-Swain officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday at 9:45 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church or the donor's choice. Arthur L. Schmid was born February 11, 1928, on a farm by St. Mary's Catholic Church near Humphrey, Nebraska, to Herman and Cecila (Hamling) Schmid. At an early age, he moved with his family to Columbus where he attended St. Bonaventure School. Because times were hard for his family, he went to work at an early age. He was employed at Columbus Grain Company, and Nielsen's Auto. On April 18, 1946, Art enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on October 6, 1947. Upon his return to Columbus, Art went to work for George Ewert Auto Sales and Service. Art married Shirley Klug on March 6, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Shell Creek. He was a devout Lutheran and became the Superintendant of Sunday School and a member of the Rejoice Choir and men's Bible study. In 1950, he drove the city transit bus before beginning his 39 years of employment with Drew's Tire Service (Columbus Tire Sales and Service). He manned the service truck for farm and industrial tire repair. He retired in 1991. After his retirement, he delivered cars for Phil Spady because of his enjoyment of driving. He also enjoyed traveling, being with his family, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Art is survived by: Wife of 63 years – Shirley Schmid of Columbus, NE Son – Terry (Renae) Schmid of Ogden, UT Daughter – Glenda (John) Bachmann of Omaha, NE Daughter – Becky (Gene) Foltz of Seward, NE Six Grandchildren Four Great-Grandchildren Sister – Lorraine Gallo of Columbus, NE Sister – Rita (Ray) Berger of Columbus, NE Brother – Robert (Joyce) Schmid of Columbus, NE Several nieces and nephews Art was preceded in death by: Parents – Herman and Cecila Schmid Brothers – Donald and Gerald Schmid Brother-in-law – Rudy Gallo
