"Art" FANSLER, developer of Manitou Heights - Rochester's first and largest residential subdiviion, south of East Ninth Street and east of the Norfolk and Western Railway tracks - died at 2:45 a.m. Sunday in South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted Saturday. Mr. Fansler, 78, resided at 1100 Hill Street in Manitou Heights with his wife Dorothy [FANSLER]. Founder of Fansler Lumber co., in 1940 and president of the firm until he sold it in 1964, Mr. Fansler constructed houses in the southeast part of the city which he named Manitou Heights and brought a small shopping area to the section. In the 1950s, Mr. Fansler donated land to the Rochester school system for use as an athletic field at Wabash Avenue and Brown Avenue. The field was used for Rochester High School football and track events until the mid-1960s, when Barnhart Field was constructed next to the present high school building. The land was transformed this summer into two diamonds for girls softball. Mr. Fansler also donated land in Manitou Heights to the city for use as a public park and the park was named Fansler Park. His firm also constructed numerous other buildings, including the St. John's Lutheran Church here and the Church of the Brethren in Walnut of Marshall County. Mr. Fansler also was founder and president of the Fansler Development Co., Inc., which promoted Manitou Heights development. Born March 14, 1903 in Kewanna, Mr. Fansler was the son of Stephen and Lena FRITZ FANSLER. He had lived in Rochester since 1931, moving here from Mishawaka. His first marriage was to Helen DARR, who preceded in death. He was married Dec. 31, 1938 to Dorothy P. AUGHINBAUGH. Mr. Fansler was a member of the First Christian Church in Mishawaka, and the local Moose, Elks and Eagles lodges. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. Surviving with the wife are three sisters, Bertha ZEIDER, Niles, Mich.; Amy CRABB, Kewanna, and Emma FANSLER, Logansport; and nieces and nephews. Eleven brothers and sisters preceded in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Foster Good Funeral Home with the Rev. David HEYWARD officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
