Description	:	Prof. Spessard Dies In Sleep Professor Arthur Ray Spessard died in his sleep early this morning at his home, Overleigh, near Smithsburg. Born May 7, 1885, near Chewsville, he was the son of the late David R. and Barbara E. Spessard. Mr. Spessard attended the public schools and the male high school of this county. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 1907 and did graduate work at Neff College, Philadelphia; Peabody Conservatory of Music, Baltimore, and in London. Read More	Prof. Spessard Dies In Sleep Professor Arthur Ray Spessard died in his sleep early this morning at his home, Overleigh, near Smithsburg. Born May 7, 1885, near Chewsville, he was the son of the late David R. and Barbara E. Spessard. Mr. Spessard attended the public schools and the male high school of this county. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 1907 and did graduate work at Neff College, Philadelphia; Peabody Conservatory of Music, Baltimore, and in London. He started teaching in Mr. Herman School for Boys, Mr. Herman, Mass. In 1913 he began as assistant voice teacher in Otterbein College, Westerville, Ohio. Several years later he was elected head of the voice department of that college and director of its well-known choral organization. He also directed the large college church choir during this time. He continued this work until he retired to his home at Overleigh in 1947. Upon his retirement the faculty of the college elected him Professor Emeritus. At the recent meeting of the alumni of that college he was named Alumnus Emeritus. Prof. Spessard was always intensely interested in musical education of youth and in community musical organizations. At the time of his death he was director of St. Paul's E.U.B. Choir of which church he was a member. He also directed the Washington County Homemakers Chorus. He was a member of the following Masonic bodies in which he was active while living in Westerville, Ohio: Blendon Lodge 39, Horeb Chapter 3, Zabud Council 99, all of Westerville; Mt. Vernon Commandery No. 1 and Aladdin Temple, both of Columbus, Ohio. He directed the Aladdin Chanters of Columbus and surrounding community, a very well known organization among Shriners. He was Past Patron of the Order of the Easter Star, and a member of the Masonic Fraternal Association, Columbus, Ohio. He is survived by his widow, Vera Rexroad Spessard and son by a former marriage, Dr. Dwight R. Spessard, Granville, Ohio, two grandchildren, Ronald and Patricia; brothers, Walter V. Spessard, Smithsburg; Lester L. Spessard, Falls Church, Va.; and Dr. Earle A. Spessard, Conway, Arkansas; sisters, Mrs. John S. Cook, Harmony, N.C., and Miss Lottie Spessard, Philippines; half brother, Woodward E. Spessard; and half sister, Mrs. Annie L. Stoner, both of Hagrestown. Friends may call at the Minnich Funeral Home, Smithsburg, on Friday between 2 and 4 and from 7 to 0 p.m. He will lie in state in S. Paul's E.U.B. Church from noon Saturday until 2 p.m. with services conducted by the Rev. Dr. F. Berry Plummer, and the Rev. Joseph Yeakle.
