On Thursday evening, June 2nd., the community of Petite Riviere was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Arthur William Corkum, one of its most highly respected citizens. Although in failing health for the past few months his passing was somewhat unexpected and came with a feeling of deepest regret to his many friends. The late Mr. corkum who at the time of his passing was seventy-eight years of age, was born at Petite Riviere and was a son of the late Edward Corkum and Letitia Sperry Corkum of that village. With the exception of some years of his early life spent in the U.S.A., the late Mr. Corkum resided most of his life in his native community. By trade a carpenter, Mr. Corkum followed that vocation for many years. At the time of his passing he held the position of Justice of Peace for this area, a position which he faithfully held for some twenty-five years. The late Mr. Corkum was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and Empire Lodge, I.O.O.F. In religion he was an adherent to the United Church of Canada. Of a very pleasing personality, honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellow man, the late Mr. Corkum will ever be remembered with highest esteem as a loving and devoted husband, father, and friend, as well as a citizen of highest Christian principles. His wife, the former Mertie Sperry, passed away twenty-three years ago. Surviving are two sons, Harvard of Waltham, Mass.; Hollis of Petite Riviere; and one daughter, Pauline (Mrs. Clark Corkum) of Mount Pleasant; also two grandsons, Harvard, Jr., of Waltham; and Billy of Mount Pleasant. The funeral, which was very largely attended by neighbours from Petite Riviere, as well as friends from many surrounding communities, was held at Wesley United Church, on Sunday afternoon at Petite Riviere. Mr. Ralph Miller, supply pastor, conducted the service and delivered a most comforting message to the bereaved family, which was based on three thoughts,"Entered Into Life," "Asleep in Jesus," and "Forever With the Lord." The choir led in singing the favourite hymns, "The King of Love My shepherd Is," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee," and also the choir rendered the beautiful anthem, "Dear Spirit, Lead Me." The organist was Harold Eikle. Pallbearers were Purvis Publicover, Alvin Hartman, Murray Falt, George Snyder, John Sperry, and Wallace Richards. Interment took place in the family lot of the Petite Riviere Community Cemetery. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse.
