Description	:	Mrs. Artie Marcia Mathies, daughter of Hannibal and Lena Barnett was born at Eddyville, Iowa, on September 15, 1857 and passed to Eternity on June 11, 1949, aged 91 years, 9 months and 27 days. During her many years she lived in different places in Iowa and Nebraska. On Jan. 19, 1875, she was united in marriage to Edward S. Spurgeon, who passed away on December 15, 1922. Read More	Mrs. Artie Marcia Mathies, daughter of Hannibal and Lena Barnett was born at Eddyville, Iowa, on September 15, 1857 and passed to Eternity on June 11, 1949, aged 91 years, 9 months and 27 days. During her many years she lived in different places in Iowa and Nebraska. On Jan. 19, 1875, she was united in marriage to Edward S. Spurgeon, who passed away on December 15, 1922. To this union was born ten children, seven surviving her, and three preceding her in death, as follows: Mrs. May Marshall of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Walter Spurgeon of Iowa City, Iowa; and Earl Spurgeon who died in childhood. Those living to mourn the passing of a tenderly devoted mother are Mrs. Maude Thomas of Cuba, Ill.; Mrs. Nellie Hammond of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Grace Hassler of Kirby, Oregon; Mrs. Lola McDonald of Joliet, Ill.; Mrs. Bessie Orrick of Exeter, California; Mrs. Lena Story and Mr. Charley Spurgeon of Farmington, Iowa. These latter two in their nearness, furnished solicitous companionship to her declining years. Her progeny also consisted of 28 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren. After her children were raised and she was in solitary widowhood, she became the cherished wife of James Mathies on April 6, 1924 at Farmington, Iowa. Six happy years followed until his death on April 6, 1930 when she was again bereaved of an earthly companion; but through all the vicissitudes of life she took the hand of Jesus and trusted in his guidance. To her acquaintances she was the symbol of happy Christian living, ever thanking and praising the goodness of her worshiped God. When she could not speak praises, she sang hymn in her enthusiasm to glorify her Savior. She was a home loving woman with a generous and hospitable hand; and she extended gifts to all her neighbors and friends, and demonstrated her forgiving nature by extending love to every creature and person. Her’s was a consecrated devotion to the Nazarene Church where she registered her membership in August 1924; and in the activities of this church lay her greatest happiness. In all her many years, even throughout enfeebled age, she never missed a service, when at all possible to attend, and was present at the last Sabbath of her earthly life, taking up the next triumphant worship in her Heavenly Home. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the local Church of the Nazarene, conducted by the Rev. Forrest Backous. Interment in Greenglade Cemetery.
