Barnes was born in McDonough county, Illinois on January 31, 1847. He died at the hospital of the Soldiers Home at Milford, Nebr., January 18, 1923 at the age of 75 years 11 months and 18 days. He was married to Elizabeth Slonecker, daughter of J. K. and Margaret A. Slonecker, on January 22, 1874, in McDonough county, Illinois. They came to Seward county, Nebraska in October 1876 and have lived here continuously with the exception of one or two years residence in Oklahoma. Mr. Barnes was a farmer by occupation and continued in that calling until he became physically unable to pursue it longer. Mr. Barnes was also one of the few old soldiers remaining with us at the time of his death. He served two enlistments as a Union soldier during the Civil War, the first enlistment was for a period of two years and on being discharged he re-enlisted for the remainder of the war. His record as a soldier was an honorable one. Mrs. Barnes departed this life August 8, 1911. Those left to mourn the departure of the deceased are J. E. Barnes, the only son, and two grandchildren, all residing at Seward, Nebr. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. L. Lewis, January 20, 1923, at two-thirty o'clock, at the Presbyterian church, and interment followed at the north cemetery.
