Description	:	War of 1812 Captain Smith's Company Aged 84 years. He was the son of Diah and Anne Gifford Manning of Norwich. -- A soldier of the War of 1812 under Major Jessup, 25th Regiment, which was on the Niagara frontier in the campaign of 1814, and in the hottest of the fight in the severe battles of Chippewa and Lundy's Lane, Canada, July 5th and 25th respectively. The latter was then considered the most desperate ever fought on this continent, the loss on either side amounting to nearly one-quarter of those engaged. Mr. Manning is quoted as saying in later years of this battle "There were some 45 of us Norwich boys who fought at Lundy's Lane, some of whom laid down their lives on that bloody field, and all fought with gallantry. We brought off our flag though it was shot from the staff and riddled with 30 or 40 bullet holes." He was a drummer.
