He was born March 27, 1834, in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. His young days were devoted to the life of toil and effort which all western settlers had to go through. His family was of limited means, so that his opportunities for schooling were meagre. Such as they were, however, he fully improved them. At eighteen he had to make his own living, and went into a blacksmith shop; he became in time a skillful workman, and to the end of his days retained the craftsman's skillful fingers. Like Tubal Cain of old; he was a cunning worker in metals, and had besides a taste for mechanics. If he could have had the fine manual training of to-day, he would have distinguished himself in either metal or wood-work, although he preferred the former. We are informed that he fashioned for his home Lodge of Masons, in Indiana, a complete set of jewels made of silver, and these are now in possession of the Grand Lodge of that state. December 7, 1856, he married Miss Jane Hixson. They made their home in southern Ohio and Indiana until 1873, when they moved to Iowa. He had been in this state prospecting as early as 1855, but did not come here to settle until the year mentioned. The trip overland by ox-teams took nearly two months. They settled on a farm about four miles south west of Eagle Grove. The original farm has been added to until it now comprises a valuable property of between three and four hundred acres. In 1862 he entered the army as a volunteer from Indiana; after serving a year he was honorably discharged by reason of disabilities. A long siege of sickness caused the loss of one lung by an abscess. For several years past his health has been very poor; in the fall of 1890 he decided to try Florida; he was certainly benefitted by the climate, and probably prolonged his life for some four years or more by the change of climate. He established a home there, where he was at the time of his death. He joined the M. E. church in his youth, and continued through life a pious and God-fearing man. He was made a Mason when quite a young man, and continued always to be interested in the craft; although a partial deafness rendered both church and lodge going somewhat unsatisfactory. Throughout life his actions were turned to the square and he circumscribed himself within the bounds of the compass. The practice of friendship morality and Brotherly Love caused him to be charitable, to look for the good in men instead of the bad, to do kindly acts, and to cultivate the friendship of all around him. Although able to acquire but little text book knowledge in his youth, he supplemented a defective education by careful observation of man and nature, his judgment was ripe and sure; and in many respects he showed the instincts of a student and scholar. He took in knowledge from his surroundings. Some letters which he wrote home from Florida, and which were published in the Renwick Times, were strikingly interesting. He leaves to mourn his departure the wife and two daughters, Laura, now Mrs. Helleland, and Hettie S., now Mrs. S. C. Higbee. An older daughter died in 1881. Out of the original Middleton family of six sons and three daughters, there are left now but two sons, John L. and Elmore, and one daughter, Mrs. James Renne. Mrs. Asahel Middleton, John L. and Elmers Middleton have arrived with the remains and the funeral services will take place at the Methodist church 1:30 this afternoon, and he will be buried at Troy cemetery.
