Born at Garden Lots, he was a son of the late Charles Edwin and Cara Ann (Corkum) Backman. He was a veteran of the First World War, serving in the marine services for four years and with the Royal Canadian Navy as lieutenant in 1939, discharged as lieutenant in 1945. (From the collection of Gwen Christie) Captain Aubrey Leon Backman, 94, Lunenburg, died July 26, 1995, in the Veternas' Unit of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born at Garden Lots, he was a son of the late Charles Edwin and Cara Ann (Corkum) Backman. He was a veteran of the First World War, serving in the marine services for four years and with the Royal Canadian Navy as lieutenant in 1939, discharged as lieutenant in 1945. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23, Lunenburg. After the war, he was a sea captain until his retirement. He was a member of Central United Church, Lunenburg and Unity Lodge 4, Masonic Order for 72 years. He was a former member of the Town Club and Grace Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Lunenburg. Surviving are daughters, Annie Mae Backman, Lunenburg; Mary Ann (Mrs. Berkley Gale), Mahone Bay; son, G. Edward, Coldbrook; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several niecces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Conrad; brothers, Charles, Norman. Visitation 7-9 p.m. tonight in Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday in Central United Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Laurence Mawhinney officiating. Burial in Garden Lots Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Veterans' Unit, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg or any charity. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse.
