Read More	Published in The Skagit Valley Herald, Mount Vernon, WA March 28, 2017 August 7, 1922 -March 26, 2017 Audrey Mae Watkinson, 94, a longtime Skagit Valley resident, passed away on March 26, 2017 at Skagit Valley Hospital surrounded by her family. Audrey was born on August 7, 1922 in Florence, South Carolina, the daughter of Jerome & Annabelle (Stokes) McCown, Sr. She was raised and attended school in Florence and from where she graduated high school in 1940. She then worked for awhile at the local movie theater. She met her future husband, a young soldier named Warren Watkinson, on a blind date in 1944 and, after his discharge from the U.S. Army Air Force, he returned to South Carolina where they were married on October 2, 1945. Together they drove back to Washington living briefly in the Bow area until settling in Big Lake where they raised their family. Over the years Audrey was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was a proud member of the Big Lake Community Club; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Central United Methodist Church of Florence, SC. She was an avid reader, and an accomplished baker. She canned extensively and enjoyed embroidery, making many handmade gifts for family and friends. She was also an enthusiastic card player, especially pinochle, and she had the privilege of being an in-house newspaper delivery person at Where The Heart Is for the past six years. Audrey is survived by her sons, David Watkinson of Mount Vernon, twin sons, Lyle Watkinson and wife Nancy of Waterford, CT and Lloyd Watkinson and wife Shirley of Burlington; 7 grandchildren, Nessa Dillon (Ryan), Nicole Oliver (Doug), Beth Watkins (Scott), Sara Buffington (Peter), Zach Watkinson (Tina), Scott Reetz (Marisa) and Wade Watkinson, and 21 great-grandchildren; along with various cousins and good friends, Cherry Bridges and Judy Smith; close friend Diane Burchardt, and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Warren; her brother, Jerome McCown, Jr., and aunt and good friend Dorothy 'Dot' Blackwell. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all the staff and friends at Where The Heart Is for their love and caring for Audrey. Memorials in honor of Audrey are suggested to the Big Lake Church of the Nazarene. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Bow Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Spinney officiating. Services are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
