There will be military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. August died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. Main St. August Fischer was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Greenway to Christ and Emma (Kusler) Fischer. He grew up on the family homestead and attended country school. He also worked for area farmers. On Aug. 27, 1950, he married Alegra Wolff at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. He was drafted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 22, 1951, and was stationed at Fort Flagler, Wash. From January to June of 1952, he participated in the atomic bomb tests at Nevada Test Site. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 21, 1953. They made their home on the farm near Eureka and, in 1957, they moved to Aberdeen, where he worked for Inman Hatchery and Kessler's briefly. In 1959, he went to work for Northern State University, retiring in 1991 as grounds supervisor. August was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, where he ushered for many years. He enjoyed traveling, going to ball games and working in the yard. He also enjoyed the company of his nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Alegra. Grateful for having shared August's life are his wife, Alegra Fischer, Aberdeen; brother, Helmuth (Arline) Fischer, Eureka; sister, Agnes (Milton) Merkel, Ashley; sister, Martha Dohn, Eureka; brother-in-law, Theophil (Joyce) Dohn, Eureka; sister-in-law, Lela Fischer; sister-in-law, Deloris Hilgemann, Aberdeen; brother-in-law, Quinton (Arlene) Wolff, Long Lake; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Margo Mae Fischer; siblings: Irene (Jake) Rohrbach, Florence (Bill) Westberg, Ella (Calvin) Opp, Arthur Fischer, Clara (Benny) Nies, Arlene Dohn; brother-in-law, Walter Dohn; nieces, Mary Opp, Nancy Schlager; and nephew, Myron Rohrbach.
