One of the enterprising and successful German farmers of Hardin county, who has succeeded in his chosen vocation solely through his own courage, persistency and good management, is August Meier, of Sherman township, a man who believes in lending what aid he can to his neighbors and the general public while advancing his individual interests, consequently he is regarded as one of our best citizens in every respect. Mr. Meier was born in Lippe-Detmold, Germany, March 22, 1851, and he is the son of Simon and Louisa (Strunk) Meier, both native of the locality in which the subject's birth occurred. They devoted their lives to farming in that country and were the parents of six children, namely: Fred, deceased; Simon lives in Germany, as does also Henry; Ernest came to America and died in Marshall, Minnesota; Charlotte lives in Germany; August, of this review, was the fourth child in order of birth. August Meier grew to maturity in Germany and attended the common schools there. He is self-taught in English, and, having been a close observer and a wide reader since coming to the United States he has become a well informed man. In 1880 he emigrated to America and in 1878 he was married to Caroline Hager, a native of Germany. This union resulted in the birth of eight children, namely: Gusta, Henry, August, William, Lewis, Charlie, Emma and Ella. Mrs. Meier died on July 29, 1909, and was buried in the cemetery at Hubbard. In 1881 Mr. Meier went to Jasper county, Iowa, and then came to Hardin county, locating in Sherman township, buying eighty acres in section 25, which was then all wild land. He went to work with a will and prospered by reason of close application and good management. He has added to his original purchase from time to time until he now owns six hundred and sixty acres in Sherman township, which comprises some of the best and most desirable land in this favored section of Hardin county. He has brought his land up to a high standard of improvement and cultivation and ranks with one of the county's leading agriculturists. He also owns one hundred and sixty acres of fine land in Grant township, also six and a half acres in the village of Hubbard. In connection with general farming he raises an excellent grade of live stock, making a specialty of short-horn and Durham cattle, Norman horses and Duroc-Jersey hogs. His stock is of such a high class that he finds a very ready market for it. He is regarded as an excellent judge of all kinds of live stock. Mr. Meier has a modern, commodious and attractive home, and a splendid group of substantial and convenient outbuildings. He has made all the improvements here as they now stand and everything about his farm indicates thrift, good management and correct taste. No better farmer or stock man is to be found in the locality of which this history treats. Considering the fact that he has accomplished so much in a strange land, where he was compelled to start with nothing, he is most deserving of our esteem and respect. It shows innate ability of a high order. Mr. Meier is a Republican and takes a proper interest in local public affairs. He has been a member of the school board. He and his family belong to the Zion Evangelical church at Hubbard.
