A native of Sweden, he was born at Smoland, Sweden, August 8, 1839, Read More	Obituary from Ottumwa Courier March 13, 1933: AUGUST JOHNSON TAKEN BY DEATH __________ RETIRED FARMER, 93 YEARS OLD, DIES AT DAUGHTER'S HOME IN WINFIELD ___________ August ("Gust") Johnson, 93 years old, well know retired farmer living on the North Court road, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Victor Sandeen, at Winfield, Monday, according to word received here. Mr. Johnson fell at his home, August 17, last year, and suffered a fracture of his hip. He has been bedfast since that time. A native of Sweden, he was born at Smoland, Sweden, August 8, 1839, coming to the United States in October 1868. He first lived near Mt. Pleasant. In 1869 he came to Ottumwa and has been a resident of Wapello County since that time. For nearly twenty years he was connected with the A. D. Moss & Co. dry goods firm. Later he moved to the farm home north of Ottumwa where he lived for many years. He served as road supervisor of Center township for a number of years. Mr. Johnson was a charter member of the First Lutheran church of Ottumwa and later assisted in establishing the Swedish Congregational church here, to which church he transferred his own membership. He was married February 22, 1874, to Albertina Johnson of Salina. His wife preceded him in death eighteen years ago. A daughter, Nita, died in infancy. Surviving are the following children: Alex Johnson of Ottumwa, Mrs. Elizabeth Abrahamson of Winfield, Mrs. Minnie Shirk of Birmingham, Mrs. Myrtle Russell of Bloomfield, Mrs. Mable Sandeen of Winfield, and Eunice, at home; and fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Swedish Congregational church, corner of Second and Jefferson streets. The Rev. E.J. Carlson a relative a relative, of Ft. Dodge will conduct the service. The pallbearers will be grandsons of Mr. Johnson: Paul Abrahamson, Loren Sandeen, Lee Russell, Harold Clarence and Raymond Johnson. Contributor: Andy Jones (49192610)
