HENKE DROWNS IN LAKE August Henke was drowned Monday afternoon in Sergeant's Lake about three miles, west of this city. With his son, Ernest, and the latter's brother-in-law, Bert Thompson, a lad of about ten years, he was out in a boat after a mess of fish. While standing up in the boat, Mr. Henke in some way lost his balance and fell backward in to the water. He had just been warned by his son to be careful and he replied that he would not be foolish enough to fall out. As he fell Ernest made a grab for him, but failed to reach him. Ernest was unable to swim, so waited for his father to come to the surface. He came into view just once and that was at some distance on the other side of the boat, and he quickly sank again. Ernest rowed to shore and sent his young companion to the neighbors for assistance. He met Hiram Holm's hired man, and, with a pole and a piece of wire bent into a hook, located the body and brought it to the surface. The remains were then taken to Ernest's home nearby. Dr. J. H. Kerr was called and was accompanied to the home by C. G. Brady, W. W. Burrill and Robert Ross. It was found that life was entirely extinct. Late that evening the remains of Mr. Henke were conveyed to his home just south of Akron. Mr. Henke had not been in the best of health for a couple of years, his heart giving him considerable trouble, a fact which no doubt quickly caused his death in the water. He was born in Lenegan, Germany, October 26, 1837, and attained the age of 77 years, 9 months and 22 days. His family has the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. An obituary will be published next week. The funeral was conducted at the home yesterday at 2 p.m., by Rev. Godsall of the Westfield Congregational church. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery. Akron Register Tribune Thursday, August 20, 1914 Akron, Iowa OBITUARY Henry Fredrick August Henke was drowned in Sargent's take Monday afternoon, August 17, 1914, aged 77 years, 9 months and 22 days. He was born at Lenegan, Germany, October 26, 1837 (1845). He came to the United States in the fall of 1867, landing at Baltimore. He worked for the U.S. government about two years, freighting on the Missouri river between Sioux City and Yankton. In 1870 he took a homestead about nine miles from LeMars. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Tripp, of Union county, S. D., Near Akron (known then as Portlandville) on March 2, 1878. Their union was bless by three children—John Fredrick, who died at the age of 13 years; William Ernest and Mrs. Chas. Fursee, of Akron, Ia. He sold his homestead and bought the Holts farm, about five miles southwest of Akron and moved there in 1882, where he made his home for twenty years. Then having bought the J. Bryant farm adjoining Akron, he moved his family there, where he resided until his death. He was a hard-working man, and through his industry and good management, acquired a considerable amount of property. He left to mourn his death his wife and two children, Ernest and Mrs. Charles Fursee, and four brothers, Antonia and Clemence, of Akron, John Henry, of Elk Point, and Christopher, who still lives in Germany. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Godsall, of Westfield, at the family home on Wednesday afternoon of last week. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
