The Rev EH Johnson of the Congregational church conducted the services, after which the body was taken to Alvord for burial. The Rev EH Johnson of the Congregational church conducted the services, after which the body was taken to Alvord for burial. Berg died Thursday evening, February 14, after a long illness, which started with a stroke. He was 83 years, 10 months and 14 days of age at the time of his death. Born in Germany on March 31, 1862, Berg came to this country when he was 17 years of age. He came to Davenport, where he lived with an uncle, Fritz Tetzner sr, and learned the butcher trade. Later he bought a shop at Rock Valley, which he operated for a few years and then went to farming in Cleveland township. On November 14, 1885, he was united in marriage to Emma Schemmel, and after living at Rock Valley and on the farm for a number of years, they moved to Rock Rapids in 1911. Here Mr Berg engaged in business for a number of years before retiring. Mrs Berg died four years ago. In 1935 Mr and Mrs Berg celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. Mr Berg was baptised in the Germany Lutheran church, and for some 61 years was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. Survivors include four children, August jr, Goodwin, SD; Mrs Fred Frink, Rock Rapids; Mrs Carl Meyer, Spirit Lake and Barney of Minneapolis; a sister, Mrs August Hagedorn, Alvord, three brothers, Leonard and Carl of Rock Rapids and John of Alvord, and nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
